Pros

-you can mostly have a standard 9-6 if you stick to your ideals and don't let people push you around -seem to be fairly advanced in terms of tech and programs used (at least one guy always seems to be in the know about the newest revit/grasshopper/rhino etc. updates and how they can work together for a better work flow

Cons

-not interesting work -disorganized and bad PM's. -PM's can't stand up to the client which means the workers suffer and do extra work to make changes in an unrealistically short amount of time -PM's make huge mistakes that could have been easily avoided had they actually looked through and approved plans properly -not enough people on projects which means a lot of pressure -the pressure feels pointless because the projects lack any sort of design and are purely for profit (why do I feel like I'm having a small heart attack everyday so that a wealthy person can become more wealthy?) -no work culture -everyone seems depressed -low compensation. seems to be an "architecture" problem but if this firm can afford to take on so many projects, they can afford to pay their workers better - some mid level employees have let the semblance of power that they have get to their head. they are angry and annoyed when less experienced employees have question or input. -no overtime paid, but overtime definitely happens

Pros

Lots of freedom to grow and develop if you're lucky to have a good manager. There are a few managers that will give you opportunities to learn and empower you to raise your status. The office can give generous bonuses during successful years. They also try (but usually fail) to create a positive and lax work environment. The happy hour on Fridays creates an appearance of camaraderie, but really it's surface deep. Most people have too much work to actually attend.

Cons

Many of the managers (senior associates) are TERRIBLE. These are folks who merely stuck around long enough to get a promotion, but really lack communication skills and management skills. Quite a few are temperamental and fail to give clear direction. The office's practice of promoting loyal employees or talented designers should be a good thing, but because there have been so many senior associates with poor management skills, the most talented staff end up leaving before reaching senior associate status. This creates a revolving door environment that the partners probably like to tell themselves filters out the lazy/poorly equipped staff but more realistically filters out the most ambitious and hungry designers leaving just the timid and ambivalent staff to remain. Also HR could offer more solutions to these issues but remains typically silent//powerless.

Firm is full of favoritism

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

- you will make close friends through the tears - good location - different software training

Cons

- you will see the claim for diversity, but if you look closely, you will see the firm uses visa sponsorship as a way of having cheap labor - you will also notice white employees rise quickly, and typically are the office favorites - diverse people in senior roles need to work x20 harder to get promoted, or need to be a complete doormat. - lack of HR/fake HR enables bullying culture from many senior PMs. No matter how many complaints are filed, juniors lose their jobs but favorite seniors will not improve their behavior and are enabled by leadership. Bad managers are not held accountable for bullying behavior.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. We are very sorry to read your perception of favoritism and would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this and the other concerns you have raised as they run counter to the culture and employee experience we are striving to create and maintain. The leadership team at the firm recently created a position dedicated to creating and maintaining a positive and diverse company culture and we are currently working on several initiatives to increase communication and feedback for managers and employees. If you are willing, please reach out to me at people@handelarchitects.com.
