Pros

Generally relaxed environment, some ability to work from home.

Cons

The firm boasts of having a “great culture” but that is very untrue. The culture is spoiled, there are many attorneys with the firm that have a god complex and are allowed to treat other attorneys and especially staff with disrespect and act outright demeaning. Case in point, Scott Hennigh and Michael Lateef. If you are staff, you have no ladder at this firm, unless you are a simple yes-man who will bend over and do whatever you’re told without question. You may be the most incapable, downright dumb person, but if you are willing to tow the line and keep your mouth shut you will be protected by senior management and probably promoted, even when you have no business managing anything. Pay is atrociously low, and bonuses are an absolute joke. There seems to be no merit-based pay. You can work your behind off, take on lots of extra work (even someone else’s entire job), and produce extraordinary results and you WILL NOT be rewarded with a pay increase or merit bonus. There are people that have worked with the firm for many years and are clearly inept yet they keep them around. The “staff appreciation week” is an absolute farce. Some pizza, a silly $75 gift card, and a “raffle” to get an extra day off. Here’s an idea... show your staff you appreciate them by paying them enough money to actually live in the Bay Area and not be forced into a miserable 4 hour round trip commute. If you want a gig where you can put in just a baseline effort and collect your check and do nothing with your career, work for HB. If you have any ambition, run, do not ever work for this firm.

If you "can do" go elsewhere

Pros

Some employees are pretty friendly and build relationships outside work as well

Cons

*some* primadonna attorneys and definitely a class structure in place. Some employees recognize skilled contributions other are too full of themselves. If you can prove capable, managing staff that is not will target you for dismissal.

Pros

Staff is generally nice; salary is okay; work life balance

Cons

Employee morale is low; feels like everyone belongs in a junior high clique; employee discipline is inconsistent; some managers are extremely difficult to work with and downright rude. People don't speak up when they see something wrong because it either is Sept under the rug or dismissed based on who is friends with whom.
