Extremely unhealthy environment

Pros

Some excellent colleagues at the non-executive level who value teamwork and the well being of the community; excellent health benefits and pension if you can survive until vesting.

Cons

The environment has been extremely toxic and dysfunctional since 2021. Bullying, favoritism, and verbal and emotional abuse are common and seemingly condoned. Priorities appear to be efficiency and meeting unreasonable demands rather than quality, teamwork, and the well being of staff and the community, although the toxic environment certainly impedes efficiency. Staff members are exhausted, burned out, fearful, and exhibiting signs of mental illness, including depression and PTSD, as a result of the environment. Staff are expected to work extensive overtime at all hours of the day and night to meet poorly defined, unreasonable demands under impossible timelines, but simultaneously threatened about job security if overtime is logged or simply not allowed to log overtime (despite overtime being an option). Turnover is extensive. Skilled, experienced employees are being forced out in favor of those who are less skilled and less qualified. Advancement opportunities are limited and pay is poor for seasoned professionals whose salary can be very similar to new hires without experience. 'Cost of living' increases actually entail increases of around 1-2% every few years. Deceit and manipulation are favored over teamwork, and even rewarded in some situations. New staff frequently ask if things are 'this bad everywhere else' and the answer is no; this environment is not typical compared to other workplaces.

Harris County Public Health, a place careers go to die

Pros

The work we do to provide services to the community and constituents is extremely rewarding. You really feel as if you are making a difference.

Cons

This place is a nightmare to work for, no merit increases, no evaluations, no leadership accountability, no growth, too much work, division within (teams) and without. People are pitted against each other and setup to fail. Your job and three other persons jobs are what you end up doing. It's good at the beginning when you don't know what you are getting yourself into.

Pros

Good benefits and retirement. You're not expected to do any work or be on time. The honor system is used to record time. There's a free gym in the break room. The executive director is never there unless there's a press conference.

Cons

They have serial sexual harassers, nepotism, racism, sexism and favoritism. At one point an entire church congregation was working on a single floor. The gossiping is horrendous and never ending. They waste tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars on unnecessary conferences each month and have zero to show for it. The pay is abysmal unless you are friends with the deputy director.
