Pros

Coworkers, coworkers, coworkers. The people below mid-level management are some of the best people I've worked with.

Cons

Wages are well under market value, my position which required an internal interview and 16 weeks of training (during which time you are disallowed to use PTO, otherwise you'd be kicked back to your old position) did NOT come with a wage increase. Forced to change availability to include weekends and holidays even though this was not said to be a thing during my initial hiring interview or even later at my subsequent internal interview for the position I moved in to. Most hiring for mid to high level positions come externally, even though they market themselves as a startup with internal career growth paths. Forcing their employees to ramp up productivity to physically unachievable levels (due to the lack of available work and other factors) by leveraging their power as an employer in an instable job market. Disciplinary actions are unclear and not universal, I was fired ONLY one work day after a verbal warning about productivity (with no previous verbal warnings or writeups) despite my productivity actually INCREASING during that one work day. Lack of communication at all managerial levels including team leads. Very few 1:1 meetings with team leads about personal productivity/metrics (about 4-5 for the entirety of 2020) even though weekly ones were promised. Our "all the hands" meetings all but vanished after work from home started; issues/frustrations that myself and others had were seemingly ignored entirely by direct managers and we had no outlet to express them further on a company-wide scale. Post-employment Helm has failed to respond to the Maryland Department of Labor's request of separation information leaving me 8 weeks unpaid in the middle of this pandemic.

Pros

Your coworkers, getting to work from home for the time being

Cons

Workload, managers, will have to constantly learn new queues to work when you’re already being paid less than or equal to Target cashiers to make ‘million dollar decisions’. I promise you do not want to work for this company. Targeting of certain employees but no disciplinary actions taken on some that they favor when they’re behaving the same exact way. Also started making weekends MANDATORY

Hello, I am sorry you had an unpleasant experience while working at Helm Services. We have been working with an external compensation team in order to evaluate our positions and to ensure our wages coincide with the market. Also, being a start-up, things can change quickly such as work schedules. We did give employees adequate time in order to plan ahead and even offer bonuses for evening and weekend shifts. Thank you for leaving feedback and we wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Pros

Co-workers, working from home, PTO

Cons

This position required sixteen weeks of additional training and an internal interview with no increase in pay. (Started working remotely due to COVID on March 13th, 2020 - roughly 3 weeks into training.) Originally told the position required us to be specialized in 3 queues; by the end of my employment we were in 13. Expectations were adjusted on a DAILY basis, productivity was monitored by the MINUTE, required to work weekends/holidays and penalized for not being a "team player" if you did not do so. Management lacked empathy and common courtesy towards employees. Zero lines of communication unless you were being penalized for your performance on a scorecard - essentially a weekly report card color coded to their expectations. Most of the qualifications for their unjustified weekly expectations did not apply to the position. Exceeding expectations was considered inadequate to them which required meetings with management and conversations about increasing productivity and performance. Worked Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and was given a raise the next week ($15/hr to $17.79/hr) to only be fired two weeks after due to "lack of productivity" - while most of the days during this period there was not enough work in the queues for the team. The two weeks prior to my release of employment, I received slack messages, emails, and slack phone calls about my "great work" and increase in productivity. They waited until 5PM on a Thursday to disable all applications on my work computer and lock me out of the system and sent me a personal email with a zoom link for 8AM the NEXT MORNING - with no information. Completely unprofessional and condescending. Happy to be away from this company. You do not want to work here.

Hello, I am sorry you had an unpleasant experience working at Helm Services. We do offer extensive training for all of our positions to ensure our team has all the tools they need to succeed. Our Risk Specialist position has specialized training since that team works on protecting Helm’s clients from a wide array of risks. During that training period, we do offer our employees full pay with benefits. Also, since we are a startup, processes can change in order to keep up with demand, we are working on streamlining our communication to ensure our team is aware of the influx. We have recently brought on a Workforce Management team in order to alleviate this problem. Lastly, we have managers meet with their team in weekly 1:1s in order to review performance and ensure the team feels supported. We are sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your experience at Helm and wish you the best of luck in the future.
