Pros

Some good people. Good central location in London. Benefits non existent - or only for some with conflicting rules on working at home for example.

Cons

Low pay. No opportunities for development. Excellent staff allowed to leave with no attempt made to keep them. An HR department that works for the Directors not for the staff. An unmanageable network making demands on the London HQ rather than supporting themselves. Trying to be too clever with their interpretation of Ethics rather than just having some and actually showing some vision. Unclear decision making processes and obtuse and conflicting statements on strategy and developments.

A sinking ship

Pros

People in HelpAge are all very committed and passionate. A medium sized org enables employees to get wide range of experience

Cons

A new CEO with no clear vision and poor management style means this organisation formerly on the up is now a sinking ship. There is a lot of discord among the directors resulting in quite poisonous internal office politics. Income for the organisation is declining and staff are less empowered to make decisions now as compared to when the last CEO was in place.

Pros

HelpAge has a great mission, and attracts wonderful, driven staff across the world. HelpAge makes a difference because it works at all levels, from supporting households and communities to pushing national and global policy.

Cons

The organization is quite hierarchical, and it can be difficult for ideas and people to move up. There is often more upward accountability than downward accountability to local partners and older people.
