Great mission - poor culture and leadership

Pros

The mission is something many people can get behind.

Cons

Despite the mission the company is on, the culture internally does not reflect what you see from the outside. Sadly, what's been created by the founders is an unhealthy work environment and poor work culture, where employees are under-valued and mistreated. The way that the founders speak to and about employees or business partners is disrespectful and highly unprofessional, with even senior team members struggling to manage their poor leadership style. They openly talk negatively about other team members in front of you and have been seen to publicly berate employees on calls. When mistakes are made, the founders are quick to blame employees and they will never take accountability when they are in the wrong. The work-life balance for many is non-existent and anyone unable to meet these unrealistic standards will unfortunately struggle. At a start-up you can assume there will elements of chaos and a fast-pace, but it should feel worth it if you're working towards the same mission, yet employees at this company do not feel appreciated or valued. Approval emails will go completely ignored and meetings will be unattended without an explanation, showing no regard for employees time. When employees have handed in their notices, they have been ignored and received no response or acknowledgment from the founders. And when employees have been sick or struggled with their mental health, unkind comments have been made, showing how little concern there is for employee wellbeing. What you see on the outside, sadly is not what is being practised on the inside and these other reviews do not reflect the reality of working at Hertility.

Good mission but unpleasant work environment

Pros

The research being done is fantastic and the mission is great Some very kind and intelligent people

Cons

Strange dynamic where everything has to be approved by one of the co-founders, leading to bottlenecks and delays. These delays are ultimately blamed on employees and the micromanagement is demotivating. Workflow and processes are chaotic and unclear. The financial management is questionable. The company over-hired and then let people go with 1 weeks notice. This was handled terribly, with absolutely no consideration given to people's mental and financial wellbeing. Hiring managers are not upfront and honest about the company's circumstances when hiring - take any promises and claims with a big pinch of salt! Employees are openly criticised by co-founders and some more senior members. I witnessed calls where people were berated in a really unprofessional manner. Some (mainly senior) members of the team take pride in communicating quite rudely, and it's common for people to be really late for meetings. Needless to say psychological safety is non- existent. This high-stress approach is passed off as being rooted in passion for the mission, and to an extent I'm sure it is, but a mission-driven company is not worth it's salt if people are not treated with basic respect. I really hope that junior employees or those for who this might be their first corporate role realise this is not normal.

Pros

Remote working - that's the only pro I can think of.

Cons

This company rotted my mental health, I would advise anyone to steer clear from them as they do not care for your mental wellbeing. From the day I started I was expected to know the company inside out and was given no training and very little guidance, this was a major red flag and I should have known from then that it was going to be a shambles. I was met with arrogance and told I was asking too many questions - only for them to later realise they forgot to share a vital learning tool with me to enable me to actually do my job properly. I was told in my interview that I would have flexible shifts and I would work on a rota basis, when I brought this up in my first couple of weeks I was told to discuss this with the other staff member and if we were unable to come to an agreement between ourselves (!) they mentioned they would need to bring in a founder to "sort it out". This went unmentioned for weeks and then I was basically forced to work the late evening shift for the next 5 months until I had to eventually say it was too much and I had commitments and needed at least one early shift. The department was a mess and there was no real rules because when a founder decided they didn't like something, every "rule" changed based on circumstance. The founders have no respect for your job role because if they decide something isn't good enough, you're berated and made to feel you are not doing your job properly, even though you have followed the guidelines given. No sympathy for you if you go through any type of life issue, I basically had to beg before given any time off. HR isn't even a department, it's one person who wouldn't dare challenge a founder. When they decided they were done with me because I wasn't lying down and taking the abuse and unprofessionalism, they micromanaged me out and started pulling me up on trivial things to break me which led to my resignation. This company is toxic and do not deserve some of the lovely people they have working for them.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us and we’re sorry that working in customer service at Hertility wasn’t right for you. Fostering a positive working environment is extremely important to us and we do everything within our power to make Hertility the best working environment it can be. We are continuously building more structure into our teams and developing our teams and managers. Our onboarding and training programme is one that receives excellent feedback from all staff. Many of your comments are harmful and inaccurate. We were extremely accommodating of your last minute requests to take time off, we supported you with paid compassionate leave, regularly rearranged your shifts, granted last minute holiday to ensure that you could support your family members, provided you with complimentary counselling when you explained that you were struggling with your mental health, made adjustments to your role to ensure that you were successful and provided you with extra training and support when you needed it. We supported you to not work your notice period when you explained how important it was for you to move on to your new role quickly and this left us in a difficult situation with covering your shifts, however we chose to do this as we try to make the right decisions for our team. There was an issue with your shift pattern and we worked as quickly as possible to resolve this and apologise for any inconvenience this caused you. We have learnt from this and now any roles that do work a shift pattern (the majority of our roles do not), this is clearly advertised in the job description. For clarity, we didn’t “decide we were done with you” - we accepted your resignation. We would welcome a further conversation with you to learn more about your specific experience so we can continue to address key issues; please reach out to our People Team at: hr@hertilityhealth.com.
