Toxic leadership

Pros

The staff are incredible — smart, kind, and hardworking. Exciting industry with unique opportunity to work with live music promoters. Great clients. Open vacation policy

Cons

The CEO’s leadership creates a toxic, unstable environment. For instance: -Feedback is vague, contradictory, and gaslighting, often delivered without any concrete examples. -Communication and strategy are weak, due to inexperience. -Most of his direct reports eventually get fired. Employees are afraid to speak up due to fear of retaliation from leadership, which silences honest feedback and erodes the company culture. All the talent and opportunity in the world can’t overcome the damage caused by current leadership.

Pros

Nothing that is worth it

Cons

- Love to use generic weasel words like "scrappy" as an excuse to cut corners and produce poor quality work, especially the avoidance of proper testing. They have 0 automated tests and their version of testing is clicking around on a few things and calling it a "smoke test". - Uses production database for testing, has no testing database at all, and says "yolo" when you call them out on it. - Still uses Python2.7 which end of life support was 3+ years ago. - A neverending tech debt amassed over 10 years, and no end in sight or plan to fix it. - Overconfident toxic passive aggressive managers who have no previous experience managing people and has no idea how to coach you to grow. No experience in managing new starters and has no clear 3 month plan. - Claims to use scrum but has no idea what a product backlog or acceptance criteria is. - Does not empower you to make decisions and micromanages everything. No meaningful feedback or concrete examples given ever. - Fake reviews written by HR, you can tell when they say "no cons! perfect place to work!"

Hive.co Response

Hey there, we appreciate the feedback on your experience working at Hive and sorry things didn’t work out. I’ll be as transparent as possible: we’ve grown a lot in the past few years and we haven’t always made the right decisions along the way. The technical things you mentioned are incredibly important. Although I’m unable to pinpoint when we parted ways, we’ve resolved high-impact concerns like improving our underlying infrastructure and workflows while upgrading the product that has made our customers successful this past year. We found success when we iterate on our product quickly and appreciate that there is a balance between speed and perfection. It’s important for us to get this right. Internally, we use Agile and JIRA to ensure we’re quick on actioning feedback. Our internal roadmap is also accessible by everyone in the company and is built based on real user feedback and product analytics. I’m also sincerely sorry to hear that you didn’t feel supported or directed towards success during your time here - we value direct, candid feedback and use regular 1:1s and transparent career ladders to push growth and we will continue to hold all our leaders accountable on this. Our goals drive us to operate in a balance and I appreciate that this isn’t the right place for everyone. Sincerely wish you the best with whatever’s next for you and happy to make that happen as best I can. As always, my virtual door is always open: patrick@hive.co. Thanks, Patrick, CTO

Great people, terrible leadership

Pros

There are a lot of great people at Hive. They’re smart, kind, and really care about the customers.

Cons

Unfortunately, the leadership team (especially the founders) lack the experience and skills to run this company. They have no idea how to manage people, build process, or create a good culture. Turnover is high, especially for roles that report to the CEO. While feedback is technically encouraged, it often leads to retaliation. The culture is driven more by fear than support, and it shows.
