Disappointing Leadership

Pros

Meaningful work, solid professional development stipend, positive and supportive relationships among direct service staff. Excellent experience working with diverse clients, and freedom to deliver services without being constrained by one standardized model or approach.

Cons

Disorganized, top-down and authoritarian management styles from CEO and upper management, priorities of the board of directors often feel divorced from the on-the-ground service delivery and the day-to-day challenges employees face in crisis settings. Extremely low pay for positions that require a minimum of a masters degree, with periodic raises that don't even keep up with inflation.

Management is Failing the Staff

Pros

Amazing mission and work with clients; co-workers are friendly and supportive. Great for highly self-motivated and self-directed individuals that don't need a lot of managerial support.

Cons

Management from board down is inadequate for the needs of the staff, organization, and clients. Communication is poor; tension is high between service providers and support staff and shelter staff. Management will not fight for their staff or stand up for them in director meetings. One director is passive aggressive to direct service providers and patronizing to their staff. Recommendations for improvements go unnoticed or there is a fear of retaliation if taken to the board. There is extreme tension between the organization and local law enforcement and ideas for improvements go unheard. There is a spirt of defeat among staff and apathy among managers. Staff are not managed well, so they are ridiculously busy or have gapping holes of free time. There is a belief that Hope Alliance is a stepping stone organization, so employees will start their careers here then move on, thus there isn't career mobility inside the organization or staff development or appreciation.

Pros

Working with residents and with staff members who truly care

Cons

Everything about this organization is the exact thing for which they receive government grants to fight against. It’s structured on control, manipulation, triangulation, and the enabling of abuse. Both staff and residents are being mistreated and abused, and the managerial abuse of power, which goes all the way to the top, allows it to continue. Anyone who speaks out about the abuse or is unwilling to comply with their unethical practices is removed, whether it be staff or residents. I was removed because I refused to be quiet about the abusive incidents and illegal activities.
