Crazy Times at Hope- No Real Plan

Pros

The students are great to work with, and some really caring mentors. Most learning centers try with the monies they get to provide for kids. Kids like the small safe environments. Mental health team and other support teams really seem to care about the needs of the kids. Decent pay, decent benefits, some good co-workers

Cons

Top Administration is far removed from the day to day operations of learning centers. They do not understand or seem to care about the educational needs for urban students(especially ELL learners), and use money in a poor fashion. Learning centers go without much needed resources and timely follow through and training to be successful. A lot of time and money seems to be on advertising and promoting Hope, but then there is no follow-through in doing what is right for kids. What is crazy is that this has gone for about 10 years? Curriculum training has been a joke, and lack of implementation caused serious gaps for students who were already behind. Some students missed whole quarters worth of work which cannot be made up. ( Some academic leads only work part-time, and others do not even answer their phones to help staff)

Pros

I miss my students with my whole heart. I feel ashamed that I may have disappointed them.

Cons

The fact that unlicensed people with no education background called "mentors" are allowed to teach a whole curriculum is outrageous. I sincerely had a heart for serving underserved youth, which is why I took on this position. Little did I know that with no education qualifications I would be expected to teach a whole class Grammar, Literacy, Math, and Art. One of the other mentors that I taught with would play math YouTube videos to substitute for his "teaching". I do not exaggerate when I say that 90% of the SCHOOL was NOT getting a proper education. Their teachers or so-called mentors were NOT qualified to be serving these youth. They spent half their days on the computer and it was draining them!!! They were distracted and unmotivated. I wanted to take them off the computers myself but I'd be going against the "curriculum". PLEASE PARENTS DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE. Hope MUST close!!!!! They are a for-profit institution and money is all they care about. If you look at management, and for god-sake the CEO, they are all white women!!!! Enough of your white-savior complex Heather OMarah. If you want to redeem yourself, close down Hope!!!! Do these children and their families justice! You are exploiting the minority community!!! You are taking advantage of poorer demographics!!! You are evil Heather OMarah!!!
