Pros

My dream job, a forward thinking company with strong values, I thought.

Cons

I had previously applied for a job at Hopin twice since I had set my eyes on them back in December 2020. I fell short twice but was successful the 3rd time round. I successfully landed the job, signed, sealed and delivered, happy days, hard work and determination does pay off! Contract and company laptop sent out, everything was as good as gold. After handing in my notice at my current job, leaving drinks and all of that comes with stepping into a new chapter, I received an email out of the blue, notifying me that my employment contract will be terminated due to me enquiring for a free hopin demo through the website during my interview process. As this was my 3rd time applying for my dream job, I wanted to do everything in my power to help improve my skillset and display that to the team. I was working for an events company that have previously enquired with Hopin about their services, I thought it be best I reach out to the team for a demo for our USA events, completely transparent, used a real name (my name - if I thought this would be a bad move, I would have posed as someone anonymous surely?) , real company name, real intentions. I then find out that my honesty, transparency and proactiveness would come back and bite me. I received a follow up call from the sdr that showed me the demo, I notified him that I would no longer be the point of contact as I would be joining the Hopin team & pointed him in the right direction, he gave me a warm welcome over the phone and mentioned when I would be starting. (No stringing him on or time wasting, I'm in sales, I know how annoying it is to have false hope) I then find out this information was relayed to his senior manager as me being a time waster & wasting "key resources" What shocks me the most, all of this was dealt with via email, if Hopins values don't match this behaviour, then so be it, but the way I was treated as an official employee at Hopin was utterly shocking and disgusting. I didn't even have a chance to plead my innocence or run through any confusion. I was treated as a random candidate, not someone that had remained determined & gone through 9 interviews to successfully land the job.

Pros

Competitive pay Good benefits Home office stipend

Cons

Poor communication between teams Virtually no onboarding for your role, kind of a sink or swim mentality Hopin seems to be obsessed with growth but totally overlooks key internal functions that are essential to growing at scale. Time off policy is unlimited but good luck catching up on all you missed when you return, because you'll miss a lot with how fast everything changes. Toxic positivity, no real focus on what's not working and how to fix it. Product changes are communicated very, very poorly, if at all sometimes.

Thank you for taking the time to review us, we value your feedback. And thanks for acknowledging our efforts towards implementing benefits that have an impact. We are actively working on many of the areas you mentioned this quarter that will make progress toward solving your concerns. We're creating an onboarding experience that is team-specific that will immediately follow our company-wide Hopin Academy for new hires - some teams have already started working on this. We also hired our first Head of People Development a few weeks back, who will be focused on our learning and development strategy and development for all of our Hopineers. We know Hopin’s hyper-growth can sometimes make the company org structure and team responsibilities feel unclear, and we’re also actively working on that. We recently expanded our internal comms team to help with facilitating better communications between teams, and are considering several ways to communicate product changes more widely and transparently because we know there’s a need for it. We’re still a startup but we’re growing up very quickly and working on improving our internal comms every day! If you are comfortable, and would like to share any more specific information, please reach out to me, or to the People Partner for your team, Marissa Pennypacker. We’d love to talk further with you. Pros

The pay is good and so are the benefits, at least where I am. There are also lots of good people working at the company that have interesting backgrounds. Of course, they are also very location-independent so you can truly work from wherever you want. The non-engineering departments seem like they are doing valuable work.

Cons

Corners are cut repeatedly in the engineering department. The codebase is absolutely atrocious. Technology decisions that are made are made slowly and without confidence. Expect to wast time implementing a lot of inferior "half-measures" until the company feels like committing to the paths that they've already chosen. Hopin says they lead with trust and empathy, but they really lead with anxiety and skepticism. Upper management, thus all management, always encourages things to be 'done' rather than 'done well.' If you are interested in working for a place where you can learn and grow by building the best thing possible, Hopin is not that place. You are not treated as an engineer, you are treated as a code monkey. It's deeply saddening to be part of a booming tech company with lots of potential that doesn't care at all about technology. You can be persistent and vocal about campaigning for the right solutions, but you will be ignored. You may be listened to, and people may even agree with you, but nothing will happen. Instead of treating you as a professional with valuable experience and opinions, you will be trained to 'stay put' and 'shut your mouth.' They are very effective at turning you into a castrated, lethargic puppy. Hopin's engineering department is a threat to the company's longevity. I am an incredibly passionate engineer, and I care deeply about this field and the interesting problems that present themselves. Hopin is one of those companies that brings it all into question.
