Dictatorship-Style Leadership

Pros

The dancers are some of the best in the world and it was an honor to work with them. Many of the staff and crew are also wonderful people and colleagues. The facilities are great and there was definitely some pride in working for the 5th largest ballet company in the country. The benefits are pretty good as well.

Cons

The culture and environment at Houston Ballet is one that operates out of fear which results in a lack of trust, creativity, and respect. There are constant communication and information silos which create more work for everyone and a lot of dysfunction. These are systemic, ongoing issues within the culture of the organization, and they start at the top. With the current leadership, it is very much a top-down structure that I would compare to a dictatorship. The people in top positions do what they can to hire 'yes people' - those who they believe won't question decisions or rock the boat in any way. This makes the dictatorship even stronger. Those who do question too much either are let go or made so miserable that they leave. There is absolutely no regard for the well-being of the human beings who work at the organization, and a good work-life balance is difficult to achieve. The Board seems to care more about being on the arm of a famous dancer at the Ballet Ball than the well-being of the staff. Everyone is seen as replaceable, except apparently the people who are promoting this terrible culture. The idea of human capital seems to be a foreign concept. I can not, in good conscience, recommend Houston Ballet as a good place to work.

Pros

Seeing the beautiful dancers onstage can sometimes make you forget you work for a hellacious company.

Cons

Genuinely the most dysfunctional organization I’ve ever seen. The heads of the company are former dancers who know nothing about running a business, the senior leadership team trades insults openly, both in meetings and through thinly veiled gossip. Passive aggressiveness permeates the building and positions are filled with former dancers or interns who have no relevant skills or competency. The select few who love the arts or have the actual talent to better the organization are hamstrung with excuses, saddled with inept teams they aren’t allowed to fire, and so overworked due to the rejection of adding additional employees, that no one in their right mind would work here. Many aren’t in their right mind inside that building. The proclivity toward internal, cross-departmental promotions places decision making in the hands of oftentimes folks who don’t even know the subject matter they are supposed to be leading, and the number of fully grown adults participating in manipulative practices is astounding. The Board is also blind to the real state of things, other than the instances when they are actively working to cover it up and avoid external exposure. Not to mention the Artistic department lording over everyone with the most inflated egos and hostility that even the dancers band together against it. This company is rotten through and anyone thinking of working here needs their head examined.

Pros

If you are a lover of the arts, ballet in particular, this is a wonderful place to work. Being around the dancers and such creative and artistic people is inspiring. Attending performances and dress rehearsals was always fun. Beautiful building and performance theater, and truly some of the best coworkers I've ever had the pleasure of working with.

Cons

Pay is not great, and many employees work nights and weekends during performance season. The culture can also be very toxic. Senior leadership definitely plays "favorites" and I saw way too many hardworking people get fired or leave on their own accord because leadership made their lives miserable. The artistic staff also has huge egos. Employees need to be better supported. I left due to terrible and unsupportive management. A shame because I loved my coworkers and I love dance.
