Pros

Mission: Animals are saved, and there are staff who are there for the right reasons.

Cons

Leadership: Org. is run by a woman who has been in her Presidential role since she was 28 years old - she is now 56. She sees this organization as hers and hers alone. She is closed minded to anyone who does not see things exactly as she does. She has no problems stretching or hiding the truth to suit her or her organization's needs. She purposely ensures that the Board members appointed are pliable to her will so that she can manipulate them to her will. One of the most dysfunctional nonprofit organizations I have ever encountered.

Pros

Organization is filled with people, both employees and volunteers, who are passionate about helping animals

Cons

Three letters: CFO. I truly believe he took this job because he wouldn’t do well in prison. He treats people like disposable poop bags, makes decisions that make absolutely no sense and when someone speaks up against him he makes it his mission to destroy them. Ironically, HR reports to this incompetent buffoon, which explains why the “People Department” can’t keep anyone - some leave in less than a week. His idea of incentivizing people is to pass out donated cans of warm Red Bull. I am not making this up. This, of course, after he instructs your manager to write you up if you don’t participate in meetings or don’t talk to him. Yeah, that’ll work.

Pros

The teams who do the actual work are the real heroes, and they brightened my day everyday.

Cons

This is the most unprofessional organization I've ever seen. The people who are supposed to be respectful leaders are, in fact, children. Nobody gets along with anyone and if you're unwilling to turn a blind eye to the poor choices they make and the way in which they treat their employees, you will not last. While employees actually save lives, their "leaders" take the credit and will find any reason to fire someone. They worship their volunteers because they don't have to pay them. There's no zero tolerance policy so, yes, some people show up drunk, or worse. In order to save a few bucks in insurance costs, they bribe their employees with iPads to keep them from reporting injuries. There is absolutely zero respect for anyone there. Ironically, employees are treated like caged animals and work horses... with next to zero benefits. I left the SPCA because by staying, I was condoning the behavior, so I went and got a new job. They'll say I'm a disgruntled ex-employee, but I'm far from disgruntled. I'm just very disappointed. If the board of directors is unaware of how miserable this place is, I implore them to take a good hard look at who (within the organization) they choose to support. And if they know, and if they're doing anything about it, well that just goes to show how bad it is.
