"Family Business" should be taken as a warning

Pros

The engineering content is fascinating, and the company is doing some important work in the world with respect to redesigning industrial equipment.

Cons

Repeatedly when I interviewed, it was mentioned that the company was run as a "family business". In practice this means micromanagement from the top, distrust of employees to do their jobs, racism, misogyny, expecting people to work overtime and weekends with no warning, and almost no project management to speak of, at least with respect to the division in which I was involved. People pleasers with little creativity survive here.

Unprofessional and Antiquated

Pros

Not applicable- nothing to report.

Cons

Hydro refuses to adopt a WFH policy which restricts them from acquiring top talent. Middle management is often unnecessary and problematic. Compensation is below market rate. Employees are micromanaged, pestered, and disrespected on a daily basis. Promotions are based on longevity at the company and not on merit. Employees can be reprimanded for inappropriate reasons. Turnover rate is increasing rapidly. Some managers are incapable of fulfilling their roles competently.

"Family" culture

Recommend
CEO approval
Business outlook

Pros

can stay here to gain experience to find better places.

Cons

In their "family" culture, family members will have an easy life, the hard parts will be left for the rest. when the company running ineffectively and need to maintain it and solve the bugs, they hire new sales and still keep all the easy money collectors, let them collect checks, and complain about hard workers. When (family) inspectors just relax when jobs are in rush, they ask an engineer to do it?!
