Not a career launchpad.

Pros

Coworkers are nice, if a little caddy.

Cons

Little or no room for upward mobility, very low pay, employees are discouraged from improving their skill sets. Management can make daily life very stressful.

Good short term position, but NOT a career.

Pros

There is room for mistakes and learning as you go. Turn over is high which gives employees room to take on additional responsibility. You have the opportunity to learn, but you will have to rely on yourself to do the research.

Cons

Additional work or "promotions" does not necessarily result in higher compensation. If you do accept additional work you will move laterally, there is no room for growth. The work is unfulfilling and leaves little room for creativity. Communication between upper management is poor, as is communication between upper management and employees.

Pros

It was nice that it was a traditional 8-5 job. I learned some interesting stuff about SEO and about the industrial world their directory represents. Most of the time the managers were nice and reasonable enough in person (not over email, see cons). I liked that they would provide regular, straightforward feedback. There was a high employee turnover rate while I was there, but that also meant that those who stayed around had the opportunity to be trained on a variety of tasks. They were flexible about time off. Company parties were fun.

Cons

Overall I thought the job unpleasant. I found the management and the work culture to be oppressive. Time was tracked to the minute. Management was often authoritative in an intense and assuming sort of way, especially over email, which was their preferred form of communication.

Having a time clock doing payroll is tracking someone's work to the minute? However, we do not allow texting or Facebook during work hours so I know how oppressive that can be.
