Unfortunately, it brings me no joy to have to provide a negative review on a company that I worked for and enjoyed. However, seeing as how the hiring process and the firing process went, I thought it would be best to express my deepest regret in this company as an employee and fear for those who are interested in working for them.
Let's start with an overall opinion from an outsider view of the company selling stradegy. They clearly only care about money and only care about quantity over quality. The engineers have it ingrained in their brains that they have to sell the most expensive, over-engineered fluff jobs with little to no idea what it takes to actually do the job and the cost per job. Even the software automatically adjusts the hours and margins for them. The company charges WELL over MSRP for everything. I am not surprised they lose jobs because of this. The engineers just put in numbers and then if the customer does not want to go with it, then they have to redo everything until the customer is happy. What a waste of time. Just do it right the first time. They add these fluff line items that clearly are just to screw over the customer. I have been doing this a long time and never have seen such a lack of understanding of the customer. When I first started and would design systems, I designed them so they would be functional but would also make money. However, they were always reviewed, and I did not have the "proper" line items. In other words, I forgot to screw over the customer.
Now regarding me as an employee and how they treat their employees. I was set up to fail from day one. I was not provided proper training nor was I provided proper equipment to do my job right. I felt like I was missed and an afterthought. I constantly felt like I was competing with my coworkers for my job. I had to be up to their level which was not obtainable due to the lack of training. They DID not provide me with work because they were “scared” I would mess up. Why not give me tasks on fake jobs so I can learn from them instead of giving me nothing. The management may also say they speak with one another, but my manager had no clue what I was doing because he doesn’t do what I do. They switched my responsibilities three times, and I adjusted and that wasn’t good enough I suppose. Instead of assuming that I am not “producing”, tell me what needs to be done to be “producing”. It’s a vague statement.
I worked countless hours for this company and busted my butt to make things happen. I worked so many hours both in and out of the office. I spent countless weekends improving myself and my skills because I take a lot of pride in my work, and I want it to be the best possible. I never complained about it and did my hardest I could. I barely had time to see my family. That did not seem to matter. I attempted to make their god-awful processes quicker and more efficient only to find out they did not care. They mentioned without much advice that I was not “producing” what was expected of me. They, not once, told me what this means. Management stated that I am not up to the level of others which couldn’t be further from the truth. They never gave me an opportunity. They did not give me work and when I had work did not provide any sort of training to get going. Pete (a fellow co-worker) told me that they wanted to take it slow with me. I feel that because of this idea I lost my job. It was really unfair to me that my job was based on Pete providing me work, not giving it to me, then being told by management I am not producing. I do not have control over this. Who is their right mind feels this is fair to a person? I explained to Pete the issue I was having, and he said he would talk to them and get things straight. Then I get fired. Sounds like he was out to get me from day one and lied to me.
Being in the industry for as long as I have, I am very familiar with what is required to do the job right. Because I did not know a few products and their details they wrote me off. They sell over 1300 products. It is impossible for anyone to know every detail about every product. I was only there for 2 months, and they never even gave me a chance. It takes time to learn them. They made me feel as though I was a second-rate employee and most of my coworkers would constantly talk down to me as if I was a child. I tried really hard to ignore it and do the best work I could do. Comparing me to others is not only unfair but not possible when you have a group that provides multiple levels of skills and experiences. You can clearly tell that, like most of the employees, we are treated as numbers and not as people and how much that person "produces" is how they are viewed as a valuable asset to the company. Not anything else matters.
After thinking about the situation in more detail I have come to the conclusion that this was in the cards from the start. They hired 2 people in hopes to get rid of one of them. They wanted to see which one would succeed and which one would fail and get rid of one of them. If not, then they would have properly trained me and allowed me to succeed. I can see the writing on the wall and could tell this was the case by the level of incompetency in training and setup from day one. However, the other employee was ready to go from day one and had everything they needed. Very fishy and very unprofessional. He has a computer/laptop monitors and everything was ready to go for him including his email address and all company provided access. Me, however, was an after though and nothing was ready for me.
Overall, they did not know my skill level and never let me show them. Every time I had an idea it was shut down because “this is how we do things”. Not once did they even want to look to me for any ideas or use my skill levels for questions or advice. They did not know me and for that they failed to utilize me to the best of my abilities. I have been doing this for far too long to be treated like a second-class employee. I have run my own companies and have been doing this for a very long time. The fact they seemed to not utilize this or even realize it is beyond comprehension. I am also pretty sure that my coworkers were saying things about me to the management that was not true but that is just speculation. I think there is an inner working “conversation” that takes place about employees and bad mouthing them to management with no evidence.
I feel that this company is doomed to fail when they don’t give their employees the correct training and knowledge to do the job, they are asking them to do. Furthermore, they treat their employees as numbers and therefore, as you would expect, it is a revolving door. Since I was let go, they already replaced 3-4 people in a span of a month and let go more. This should tell you something.
HR is by far one of the worst I’ve dealt with. This needs to be changed ASAP. They are very slow to respond and instead of helping you they try to make you do their work. They are also very argumentative and don’t seem to really care about you whatsoever.
