I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I've been around the block and I like ILM a lot because it is much more well-oiled in process. You have to learn a bit quick the processes, but this place has been good to me and building up my career. Senior leadership trained me well, and now I feel more than prepared to do anything and capable as an artist. Benefits are really nice and they pay for OT. All the medical, 401K is good, when you first receive vacation...

    Cons

I'm a bit concerned with the studios in Vancouver, London, and Singapore. I don't think they get the same standard of training as San Francisco. Sometimes jobs are so bad, they always come back to San Francisco. Training and leadership (maybe incentive for SF members to move to other places?) I think is definitely needed. I got hired at the cusp of Disney buying Lucasfilm. I know this place was ran a little differently...

    Advice to Management

Training is not equal across the board.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Working on the biggest/best projects in the entertainment industry, all of the time.

    Cons

Chose to leave after seeing layoffs, at the same time we were hearing we'd made record earnings on films. All of the work is being outsourced.

    Advice to Management

Fairer pay for Jr artists that live in the area, keep work in the Bay, otherwise management is pretty awesome.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The caliber of the people working there is high. ILM is the best at what it does!

    Cons

There is HIGH turnover in production. The salaries are laughably low and coordinators are underappreciated in general. You have to leave the company and return if you want to get promoted beyond Coordinator.

    Advice to Management

There is zero focus on retention.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Working with some great people who bring their talent to a company that sorely lacks respect for it.

    Cons

Everything. Broken pipeline, kept on life support by legacy ILMers who refuse to change. Horrible deadlines and under-bid shows that cause unmanageable chaos. Clients are verbally abusive and disrespectful to the artists making their films and ILM does NOTHING ... because clients are money. So, minimize the employees and ignore them, clients are all that matters no matter how crazy, incompetant or rude they are. ILM has...

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and make the changes that enable ILM to adapt to how these shows are done now. Treat your staff with respect. They don't want donuts for doing a good job and long hours, they want raises and work/life balance in reward for their skills.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The story of this place and the people that started everything is so inspiring.

    Cons

No morale No culture anymore, it's turning into a production line Long hours You will get emails about how the company is thriving, how successful the projects are thanks to you, but you will no get bonuses anymore. A promotion is just impossible, Managers don't really pay attention to who is who, they usually promote the whiners and not the most talented or hard workers. Advice to Management

You are losing people because of the lack of morale, the micromanagement is also killing the passion. Listen to your employees, make managers understand everyone's level so you can promote people in a fair way , they are moire like "bosses" than leaders. Reward people, they are your company! Trying to save money hiring Jr's is not smart, you are losing Senior artist that now are leaving your company and will eventually...

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Not challenging, little overtime, good perks from Disney, working with some of the best people in the industry

    Cons

Not challenging. Even if you're senior, you'll mostly get junior work when you start. Managers can be very impersonal. No chance for advancement. Embarrassingly low wages, and they'll expect you to still be able to take lots of time off between projects. Almost no raises given, so with inflation, you end up making less money over time. You feel like a cog in the machine. Employees are disposable. They advertise...

    Advice to Management

Be more honest and personable with employees. Disney has really led ILM into the ground, and I don't see that changing.

    Pros

good benefits for employees, used to be better pre disney

    Cons

Managers who truly have no idea what the persons they manage actually do. if you not buddy buddy with them you won't go anywhere and will have actively thrown hurdles in your way.

    Advice to Management

get managers to actually take interest in the day to day work.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not one besides the fact it's got this big name and good benefits.

    Cons

If you are not friends with the right group of people you are out. You might say that's any company out there but I've been at almost all of the big companies in the industry. Nothing even comes close the how ILM works.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving out any kind of work related special treatment to your friends. It's so painfully obvious. Stop treating your drinking buddies in the departments like employees first class and the rest like disposable attachments. Stop giving them the best work unconditionally and the rest who doesn't suck up to the gods of the departments are neglected. Stop giving long contracts and staff to only your drinking buddy sweat...
