Politics, Micromanagement, and a dreadful office

Pros

Absolutely nothing. It is a publishing company only in name. In reality is a private equity company looking to slash costs to increase margins.

Cons

A disregard for the digital information ecosystem. Leadership demands results, but can't make the investment to make improvements. It's in an incredibly negative feedback loop right now. Lastly the silos created by a dictatorial leadership style is unbearable.

Pros

Good work/life balance, great location, provides access to the financial industry for networking purposes. I found that I left with a good amount of contacts at other firms, which was helpful later. Also, the pay was not bad, nor were the opportunities for bonuses.

Cons

This was easily the most toxic professional environment I've ever worked in. Other commenters are right; the talented people leave as quickly as they can after they realize the caustic environment they've gotten themselves into. Those who stay are unremarkable and sometimes only barely competent, though are usually decent at navigating the complex political structure. Upper management seems to strategically pit teams against one another in terms of competing with funding and other resources, so mid-level management becomes territorial and anxious, which filters down to create an atmosphere of fear and stress. Around new product development, the compliance environment was suspect, dangerously close to skirting around financial regulatory lines. Also no mentorship culture, and if you go in, prepare for backstabbing. There are some horror stories.

Pros

Get in with upper management and you're set for life. Cronyism rules Great for slackers, office is empty by 5

Cons

Rotten from the top and the poison runs all the way through this toxic company. Incompetent sales people are promoted and given pay rises, not for selling, but for sucking up to their bosses. People are hired not on their ability to perform but whether they have family who are friends with management. Sexual harrassment not uncommon. HR is there to defend and protect the company and help build cases to fire employees rather than protect them. Pregnant employees beware, that's apparently a reason to get fired here! Systems are a joke. I've never seen a company with so many, let alone so many that dont work. The few good people that work there (if there are any left) are treated with disrespect and disdain when they try to follow the policies and procedures. The UK team barks demamds of the US team without understanding what they really need or what the information they're given actually means. Be prepared to work on US holidays, as the UK don't care. In their eyes, the US staff are second class citizens.
