Everything that could be toxic about a workplace.
Pros
-Lots of free time: apply to other jobs, watch stuff on Netflix, plan Facebook events - Air conditioning - Very high forgiveness for slip-ups because of the high turnover - Ability to pioneer your own projects and take control start to finish
Cons
- Long hours, 10-7, and lunch must be eaten at desk (no break) - Low pay, no health insurance or 401K opportunities, no OT - No opportunity to develop relationships in the art world - When male clients harass and sexualize female salespeople, the female salespeople are threatened to be fired for *being* harassed. - Vocal racism, homophobia, sexism, and prejudice abound at every level of management. Any minority can expect to be demeaned, especially black people, Asians, and LBGT people. - Labor violations. The company doesn't pay OT despite mandating 45+ hours per week for a non-exempt position. - Complete dishonesty. Certificates of Authenticity do not actually ensure that the artwork is by the artist Jamali. The company sells forgeries and fakes at a full premium. - No secondary market. Official promotional material and the sales manuals instruct employees to lie to customers about the art's appreciating value, but the company doesn't buy back art and nobody in the secondary market sells or legitimizes Jamalis in any way. - Tax fraud. They will collude with clients to charge half the amount (say $44,000 out of $88,000) to one credit card and half to another so that the client and the gallery can save on taxes - Hostile workplace. All of the above plus blame, cruelty, and poor treatment. A total dog and pony show.
