JCU is not adapting to disruption in the sector

Pros

Working conditions and hours are good for support staff, not so good for academic staff. This is typical of the university sector though. Research standing in some areas is world class, so there are some really interesting people around.

Cons

Poor leadership, siloed culture and disgruntled management. There seems to be a culture of denial operating where the executive level is quick to blame and slow to take responsibility for the student experience and product offering not keeping up with the rest of the sector.

Pros

The staff who work directly teaching students and the staff working to support students are hard working and demonstrate an authentic duty of care.

Cons

The leadership is nepotistic and cases of bullying academic and professional staff are rampant. There is a toxic culture at the core of JCU's leadership that led to damning report by the Discrimination Commissioner in 2017. The truth is the report changed little and those in leadership positions continue to haemorrhage money and then give academics workload well beyond the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) to try to make up the difference. In an attempt to reduce current full time staff, they have entered into revenue share arrangements with a white label partner and have begun to move degrees online.
