A culture ripe for change

Pros

Jamestown buys really interesting properties in desirable locations and compensates some employees well. There are some really great and talented people within the organization. The company embraces sustainability initiatives, and does not skimp on holiday parties.

Cons

The biggest issue facing Jamestown is the senior management team, which has one dominant personality who sets the tone for the entire company. This executive has been extremely successful setting the creative vision for the firm, but lacks experience managing and leading an organization. The firm has grown rapidly over the past few years in terms of head count and assets under management, however, it generally operates as though it’s a small family-run portfolio. There are typically too many “cooks in the kitchen” and senior executives need to weigh in on decisions as small as paint colors. The culture that has resulted is one in which employees are not empowered to make decisions and the resulting bottlenecks frustrate everyone involved. Good design typically trumps speed to market and making the most prudent financial decision. There are conflicts of interest, with significant others of senior executives acting as third-party consultants, which only makes the decision making process that much more convoluted (and arduous). Recently a “culture committee” was formed and a book club was instituted. While having a book club is a nice extracurricular activity, it does not improve the day-to-day-challenges facing all employees. I would agree with the 2/22/2015 review below that notes senior management has favorites, which some days makes Jamestown feel like a middle school with small cliques. There are a handful of corporate apartments, some of which only select employees are allowed to use and as such sit vacant the majority of the time. There have been some employees who have advocated for change, however, most have since left the firm, which ultimately drives Jamestown toward a “yes man” culture. The result is a frustrated employee base that experiences high turnover.

Leadership Gap

Pros

Nice office spaces, competitive compensation. flexible work hours, properties in premier locations. hotels are nice when on travel.

Cons

The greatest challenge is senior leadership. As much of a premier organization that senior leaders think they have, Jamestown is at best a glorified "mom & pop" - and not in a good way! From an organizational perspective, the wrong players are in the wrong roles. There are three key people and everyone else is very much an outsider. As much as they say they listen to the ideas of the people, they do not! The senior leadership pride themselves by having Jamestown being known as a great place to work, and if you are only concerned with your paycheck and having a nice office to look at - Jamestown is for you! Jamestown is an organization built on inefficiencies and an unstable framework. Cost containment strategies are simply overridden based on whether or not the requester is a "company favorite." Bonuses are awarded to people based on if they are "liked" and not on actual performance or merhit. Annual reviews are absolutely meaningless, and have no weight on earning potential or growth. Talented people are marginalized, while squatters and non-producers are retained simply because of favoritism. There are no plans in place for true employee development. People are given impossible tasks, then verbally reprimanded and ultimately shoved to the side unless you are apart of the insiders. There is no accountability in this organization because granting "special exceptions" are at its core. The worst part is that the people know about the favoritism and the bad leadership and wasteful processes. Yet those same people go along with it because they know as long as the current leadership in place nothing will change. I could not in good conscious recommend this company to anyone looking for more than a paycheck.

Jamestown Response
11y
I am Matt Bronfman and I am the CEO of Jamestown. We take employee feedback very seriously and I want to take a moment to respond to this comment. Briefly, we have the good fortune to have grown quickly in the last few years, by over several billion in assets under management. But that growth presents challenges. We want to be and must remain entrepreneurial. But at the same time we must acknowledge and establish more formal institutions. We are working hard right now to improve our processes. In the last few months, we have conducted town hall meetings, established a suggestion box (and rewarded employees for participating), forged guiding principles, instituted formal training for leadership, and we are implementing 360 reviews of leadership. We are committed to having a collaborative culture, one that puts employees first. We already have done a great deal and are doing more in the coming months. I do strongly disagree with the criticism of our HR Department. What I don't think the writer sees is the extent to which HR has been working hard to implement the changes noted above. HR has been instrumental in so much more, including our new book club and in us having some of the best health benefits in the industry. Thanks for the feedback and I hope you will work with me to make a Jamestown an even better place to work in the future.
