Once great, but a cultural decline

Pros

Ethics, values, discount, Partnership hotels. I still believe co-ownership is a better way if doing business, if done properly.

Cons

Years of mismanagement and underinvestment in the infrastructure have left their scars. Not the unique culture community it once was.

Pros

Some lovely Colleagues Partner discount Good brand name on CV

Cons

This retailer is a mess and as a result is becoming an increasingly negative and unhealthy place to work. In the team I was in, it was badly managed as a result of the business’ difficulties. The workload was relentless with utter confusion on how to work within a very messy and complex set up with the two operating brands - John Lewis and Waitrose. Colleagues appear very serious and stressed on calls. The staff turnover seems to be high in head office with most new, talented employees (Partners) serving only a year. Long-serving Partners seem to battle on - I assume because the madness has become normal to them or perhaps through a fear of leaving or a desire to be potentially be paid off through redundancy. Senior managers allowed a culture of bad behaviour to go unchallenged for too long making it a toxic workplace for too many. It falls far below the expectations I had, and would expect, for an iconic British brand. It’s with disappointment and sadness that I wouldn’t recommend John Lewis Partnership as a place to work.
