Pros

-They give you opportunities to grow by gaining experience in projects relatively quickly, that would be otherwise difficult to get in most other companies -Gain experience and skills quickly in an exciting industry -Very little bureaucracy and office politics -They treat employees as real people and are extremely friendly and understanding people. Not a lifeless corporation -They hire smart people who are also fun to be around, they like to have a good time while working and be generally likeable humans to each other -Easily accessible by metro -Relative freedom given to you to choose what you want to work on, which is rare when you are starting out at other companies -Fun company outings and extra curricular activities at work

Cons

-Starting compensation is a bit below industry average, I expect that will change with time as the company grows more -Sometimes, they provide the low-fat cream cheese for company meetings instead of the full-fat version. I stand in solidarity with full-fat cream cheese

Point taken on the compensation front. We've already taken steps to increase compensation and will continue to do so as we grow. And... we splurge on the full-fat cream cheese now too ;) -Tamaryn de Kock

Pros

We have a pretty decent mission; democratizing small business software. More importantly we have a pretty awesome team. Fairly basic HR policy that stats and ends with a mission to treat people as... people. We avoid being overly bound by policy and try to do things that make sense.

Cons

Not enough time in the day. Honestly though, the starting compensation is not yet where we are targeting it will be soon. We do try to start people at the low end of the market value of a new employee and then if all goes well, grow their compensation faster than average in the first two years. Typically in year 3 the goal is to have them meet or exceed what they could be earning elsewhere. Compensation is also done in groups and is transparent. So its ok now, but getting better all the time.

Pros

- fantastic coworkers - lots of opportunity to grow and improve - you can make a difference - a great place to start out your career as a young dev

Cons

- not as cutting edge as they could be - technical seniority on the development team is lacking (tenure !== seniority) - high turn over with new devs - low starting pay (takes a long time to reach industry average) - hr does not really have your best interests at heart and occasionally provides misinformation

Dear reviewer, Thank you for your feedback. I am glad that you had some positive experiences. I am sorry to hear that there was something that happened with perceived misinformation. I can only tell you that we highly value transparency and that if something went wrong in that regard it was not intentional. We will continue to strive to improve in that regard. A few items that I think deserve an answer: 1) Starting pay is typically an intern's salary. Over the years it started really low and has increased by about 30% in the past 5 years. We continue to try to improve it as the company grows. After the internship, the full-time starting salary is definitely lower than the top of the industry. We truly like to start that way and then have people get 15% or even 20% raises. It helps them and us make sure that the fit is good as we go along together and feels like we invest in all our futures together. All of this is explained up front. HOWEVER there is definitely room for improvement and we are actively looking at raising the post-internship starting salary. 2) The high turn over with devs is pretty intentional. Most of that is from interns getting to the end of their internships. The turn-over for people here more than 2 years is very very low. We have no expectation that people just starting out in their career will want to stay here forever. They often want to learn a lot and then see something different. We aim to provide that experience. Most people are pretty happy with that. We think of them as Alumni more than ex-employees and we mostly keep in touch. 3) I have to disagree with your assessment of technical seniority. There are a variety of areas we need experience in: database, features, architecture, logic and coding, etc... We have some in each of those areas some who have learned here and others that we recruited form senior positions at other technology companies. There are new areas related to DevOps as we are a multi-tenant cloud-based application. We are developing those capabilities but it is a pretty new area. Regardless we will continue to upgrade those capabilities through hiring and professional development. 4) We currently use a variety of technologies. We use a java-based IDE to build using javascript in an HTML5 environment (tool is called Servoy). We use node.js, we work on Microsoft Azure and GCP using Kubernetes and a host of other leading edge tools. We are developing a built-for mobile add-on to our application. I know it's not quantum computing but I will leave it to readers to assess its level of modernity. Ultimately, the responsibility for a negative experience rests with me, so I am sorry if your experience was not as good as both you and we hoped it would be. Your feedback is appreciated and we will use it to try to improve. I wish you luck with your future endeavors. Sincerely, Jon Ruby CEO
