Pros

The camaraderie of SOME of the teachers and staff.

Cons

They administration does not stand behind their teachers and does not enforce any kind of disciplinary actions. The kids start to catch on and continue to misbehave with no real consequences. Obviously not all kids are misbehaving but when the administration does absolutely nothing to the ones that are, this eventually causes issues with learning in the classroom. Also, the pay. I would cringe when I would hear that the higher ups believe teachers shouldn't worry about how much they're getting paid because it's about teaching children.

Pros

-diverse student body -amazing co-teachers -decent local administration, though often disorganized

Cons

-mold in buildings that was not remediated and was covered up -roof leaks, maintenance issues that were never fixed -lack of technology available, yet teachers required to use it -lack of positive feedback from district, only negative -district's main concern is getting bodies in seats as they are financed through attendance, second priority is test scores- last priorities are quality of education and teacher morale/experience -make top-down decisions without listening to or consulting those affected, including parents, teachers and students -lack of coordination/organization in EVERY area. Make last-minute decisions constantly and expect teachers and staff to deal with it, then criticize us for a lack of student progress -almost every grade level lacking- teachers, resources, curriculum, technology, safe/adequate learning environment -504's and IEPs, and RTI are not enforced as they are under-staffed and many teachers asked to fabricate information on legal documents saying students are getting the hours of tutoring/intervention they are required by law to get.

Pros

Camaraderie with teachers and paraprofessionals is pretty good. The custodial staff and maintenance work very hard and are always helpful.

Cons

The pay is horrible and less than advertised. Don’t expect any pay increase and be very sure to check your pay stubs. There is no support from the administration and if you read the words “at will” in the job description take it very seriously. You’re going to be told often that you can lose your job for any number of reasons. They have a very high turnover rate of teachers and staff every year. My first year I was told it was a 76% turnover due mainly to resignations. A lot of the kids are good kids. Unfortunately, there’s too many who cause behavioral/discipline issues with impunity. The class sizes are large, also. Some classes are 30-32 students. You may think that’s okay but it does make it very difficult for teachers. Administration will do little to help teachers with student behavior. ISS is a great place to catch up on your sleep, btw. Students are allowed phones and electronic devices at high school. The students are very rude to teachers and staff because they know nothing will happen to them. The students word is always taken over the teachers when it concerns behavior. Teachers dread the end of the year because everyone gets an exit interview. Quite a few get fired no matter if they’ve been there 20 years or 2. Simply put, the work environment is like walking on eggshells and after seeing your paycheck you wonder why you even became a teacher to begin with.
