Pros

- Most of the trainers/instructors you are paired with are really nice, relaxed and helpful - Good pay (£13.50+ hr) - Learn a whole new range of skills working with children (With different behaviours) - great experience to take with you.

Cons

In any organisation communication is key and even more so when in a safeguarding environment working with children. The director doesn't seem to know how to communicate professionally with her staff. Senior members of staff shrug this off by just saying it's "her personality", but it's not acceptable to adopt a rude and bullying behaviour just because you're having a bad day. UPDATE: After writing this review Rachel (Director) called me to give me five minutes of verbal abuse including her disapproval of my review. She claimed I had a 'personality disorder' and at the end of the call could only muster calling me a 'Hindrance'. She told me that it would be best to take down this review and she will call me back in an hour to discuss my employment." - I called her back to resign from my post with immediate effect. It is clearly a toxic working environment where things get done by intimidation and shouting. - If you have an emergency, you better be prepared to be told that you can't leave your session UPDATE: During the telephone call above, Rachel stated " It's not an emergency if it doesn't require an ambulance, and unless you are a paramedic in your spare time then there is no need for you to leave your post"... instead of supporting her staff in an uncertain time she was dictating what was and wasn't acceptable to her as a family emergency. I am sure, if the shoe was on the other foot, things would be different. - There is a lack of communication within the office, where staff in the field are getting yelled at by parents because the office staff have failed to update or inform the field staff about emails/ information sent previously by parents. UPDATE: The office staff do their best with the information that they are given, however more work should be done by the company's leadership, to ensure exactly what additional support is needed for a child with needs when parents report their child of having a medical illness (e.g., autism) -myself and two other instructors were verbally and physically attacked by a child due to not having the correct information available to be able to put the best measures in place - despite parents informing JJ that their child had an illness. When confronting Rachel with this, it is not her fault but our fault, the parent's fault or whoever else she can blame instead of taking responsibility for the weaknesses in her systems and policies.

Pros

None, none, none, none, none.

Cons

First of all, the wage is not enough for the amount work you actually do. They claim to write and plan all lessons, but if you care about what you’re teaching a good chunk of your time will be taken up by making the lessons better and easier for the children to follow. There is a massive turnover of staff, the management are unsupportive and rude. Read your contract with a fine tooth comb as if you’re ever up a creek without a paddle they will still expect you to be in work. It is close to impossible to get a day off when needed for mental health or illness, and if you’re working on a carousel of people from junior jam and someone else rings in sick before you, you are given the biggest guilt trip ever because they now need to find cover for more than one person in one school. If you need time off if you have a medical emergency, family emergency, or god forbid a funeral, they won’t let you have it. Then they have the cheek to ask you to cover miles away from your home, for the favourite staff. If they do grant the time off and you need some more off due to sickness, it’ll get thrown in your face because they actually have to do something with their day other than bad mouth about others in the office. These aren’t just my experiences, they’re experiences of those I have met through working at the fantastic schools. All the holidays are unpaid too, so to live comfortably, you will need another job. Since I have left this job role, I have upgraded what I do. Similar to this, but better. Not with the help of this company because they refuse to give you a reference if you give a bad review. Not that I needed it because I’m worth 10x this, and this new company saw that.

Junior Jam Response

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. As a company who has been working within education for 19 years we welcome the opportunity to assess feedback and grow where possible. We also welcome input from our staff on how to improve our lessons. Each year we strive to improve what we believe are comprehensive and engaging lesson plans for our pupils. We offer our staff presentations to follow in lessons and a very detailed lesson plan in lesson that range from Reception - Year 6. We always encourage staff to get in touch with any ways they believe the lessons plans can be improved upon. We are also very vocal about staff being able to contact us regarding the need for extra material for longer lessons or help differentiating the lessons when there is a mixed ability class. Junior Jam would advise any future candidates reading this review to bear this in mind and have communication with the music (or any other department) head so that they can support you as needed throughout your time with us. Junior Jam’s policy on time off is simple and outlined within the staff handbook and our onboarding sessions. We ask for 4 weeks’ notice, not 9, and we always try to accommodate any holiday requests that come into us. We need to be able to cover your absence as we cannot leave schools without the cover they have booked. We also sometimes do ask staff from other areas to cover absences, but this is not bases on any bias; purely a need to have staff within our schools. If you're asked to travel outside of your usual area to cover, it's likely we have offered extra pay for attending. Regarding a funeral, I would like to state that no Junior Jam employee has ever been denied the time off to attend a funeral! While it is the case that the timetables, we provide to our staff are term time only, It is not true that Junior Jam staff are not paid for holidays. School holidays are not unpaid, They are paid as the government 12.07% of hours worked within the month. If anyone is ever confused about their holiday pay entitlement. We do ask that they contact their head of department. We are always happy to discuss this and any other queries our staff or potential new hires have and have done so successfully with many employees. From looking at the length of time you continued with Junior Jam 1-2 years, it seems like their were some positive points for you as you must have accepted a new contract with us at the end of your first academic year. Thank you for wanting to continue to work with us for the time you were here. It’s a Glassdoor recommendation to allow the reviewer to continue the discussion offline, We would of course welcome this and ask that you email your former head of department. Thank you Junior Jam team

Pros

Working with children and seeing them learn

Cons

Trust the other 1 star reviews. The CEO serious issues. There’s plenty other teaching jobs out there. Stay clear of these lot your mental health will thank you. They lack empathy for employees , they don’t do the word employer any favours.
