Avoid this station if you can help it
Pros
You get experience in the industry so you can move on to a better station easier The viewing area loves you and will treat you well
Cons
Very low pay but better than the other stations in town. I got a job at another company that makes far less than KY3, doing a job that has less significance to the end product, making nearly double what I made at KY3 after 6 years. Very bad hours, you will work nights and weekends and be expected to come in early or on your days off at the drop of a hat. Low morale in the newsroom. Everyone there is burnt out and tired of getting stepped on by management. It is truly a toxic environment and the toxic culture makes creating quality work extremely difficult. The station suffered from bad management before it was bought out by Gray Television and since the buyout the place has gone down in flames. There has been rampant job cuts and pay cuts. They have reduced the staff by a significant amount, expect you to produce more than ever, and not pay you for overtime. The management is highly questionable. They keep people on staff who have worked there for a very long time. And I can admire loyalty. But these employees are burnt out and avoid work at all cost. They go through new people every couple months because they are abused so much. No one can ask the 20 year veteran to pull their weight so they make the new hires making slightly more than minimum wage carry their weight and the weight of 2 other dead weight. The place has been plagued by turnover ever since the buyout. i can think of 11 people who have quit the newsroom in the last year, that is likely close to 40% of the employees. And the remaining 60% are looking for a way out. If that isn't a sign of incompetent management what is? My advice to anyone who is in a position where they are desperate enough to work here is to not sign a contract at all costs. Come in work until you can line up your next move. Don't get locked in here, the management and culture will ruin you over the course of your contract
