Uses options as an excuse to underpay

Pros

Great talent, smart and energised staff

Cons

Won't compensate staff fairly but uses 'market data' as an excuse to set low salaries. Tries to convince staff stock options make up for low compensation. Just cut value of options significantly with last financing round, screwing over all their loyal OG staff members.

Pros

Kardium has a core team of very talented and knowledgeable employees. Challenging work, interesting product and a constant steep learning curve makes working at Kardium very rewarding.

Cons

The company tries to get the most out of employees without putting much in place with respects to professional growth. There is peer pressure to work long hours in order to achieve deadlines; thus, often employees work more than 60 hours a week. With 100% connectivity there are no boundaries between work and personal time.

I agree with you that we are working on an interesting and challenging project. And I agree that we have built a great team of very talented and knowledgeable employees. And yes, sometimes we have to work hard to meet our goals, which puts extra demands on the team. We are working to build a company that will positively affect the lives of millions suffering from a serious disease, and it takes a significant effort to do that. An exceptional goal sometimes takes exceptional commitment. Although I understand that you feel we did not meet your needs for professional growth, we do try to ensure that our team is properly trained for the job they are doing and the ones they will take on. We do send many of our employees to conferences for training to increase their expertise in the field they are working on, and we do have a tuition policy that also lets you take courses related to the career path which you want to follow. Our employees are the only reason we will be successful and it is important that all of us are happy, healthy and productive in order for Kardium to succeed. We do offer very flexible work hours, significant vacation time, and a casual work environment. I am sorry that was not how you felt at Kardium and I am sorry that Kardium was not a positive experience for you. Best of luck with your endeavors in the future. Doug

Critical time for the company

Pros

Lots of smart people, and the product is highly innovative. Compensation is fair when all components are considered.

Cons

Company lacks diversity of personality type because they typically only hire engineers. Decisions are made by “consensus” which actually means that the loudest voice wins, which in turn leads to egotistical and highly political behaviors and inward-focused decisions that serve to please longstanding trusted stakeholders rather than potential customers. Becoming a trusted voice is nearly impossible if someone wasn’t at the table when the company formed ~15 years ago. This is clear in their product, which is highly capable of several functions but overly complex and expensive to produce and use - exactly how their smart engineers like it! The company is already having some challenges identifying which part of the market they will target with their product, but given how many brilliant people they have on staff, they’ll probably figure it out.
