Pros

The benefits are good, paid vacation, paid personal days and sick days. Health insurance, dental insurance, and vision insurance. Overall great co-workers that care about what they do. Flexible schedule in certain departments. Casual environment, frequent office events and the workers feel like family at times. The dress code is relaxed.

Cons

Compensation is generally below industry standards and burdens are placed on employees to perform multiple duties with no additional compensation consideration. The term used most often is overworked and underpaid. True and consistent. The CEO and President has no integrity or morals. His word means nothing. C-level doesn't care about your ethics, professional or private. It is a real bonus if you're promiscuous. The company has a below average software package that has been rushed to market virtually untested. The lack of quality and forethought in new products has shown in customer dissatisfaction. They hide behind skewed support numbers that show customer service to be much better than it really is. The lack of solid processes and leadership at key levels shows in a product that is touted to be more than it really is. If you are a "Yes" man or woman you fit in well. Buddy system is in place for upward mobility. As a result you have people designing software and making key business decisions that make a bad software package even worse.

Pros

Decent comp and benefits, although slightly below market. There is an attempt to reform the company and tech stack with a new CEO and aggressive hiring. Work space and hardware/software provided is good. Low cost of living in the area. Convenient location and commute.

Cons

Technology is sub-par. Many of the developers are definitely towards the junior end of the scale and the codebase reflects this. This may be a plus for developers starting their career. Senior devs beware. Bait and switch recruiting. Interviewed for job X, made it clear not interested in tech Y. Was placed in both a different role than interviewed for and also working almost exclusively on Y which isn't even on my resume. This extends to the "great culture" which was very quickly found to be the opposite. Poor communication, office politics, and very quick to provide exaggerated negative feedback over much or nothing. Very rural town. If you're young and looking for a social life this large downside. Visual basic. Despite recruiting C#. Absolutely no mention of such until after hire. Misleading. 25% match on 401k if that's important to you.

We always appreciate feedback. We take pride in being honest with where we are and the direction we are heading, especially in regard to our technology. We are sorry to hear that there was a disconnect for you on what a Team Lead role means here, and the diversity of the skill levels on teams, and we certainly wish you well in finding your next position.

Pros

Coworkers are about the only real, tangible, bright side to this place. You make a great bond with your coworkers because you work/travel with them constantly. It becomes a small family. Plus Richard is a genuine, kind, man.

Cons

Where to begin? First of all, it's hilarious to me that there are all these 5 star reviews in the same day...convenient. As for the cons...pay is a big one. They pitch this false mentality that, since they are in little old Carlinville, that the wages are fair and accurate for the area. That's a lie. Current Karmakians that are reading this...go check out the "Know Your Worth" section on Glassdoor (it's on the homepage). I promise you'll be disappointed. Secondly, they have the mindset of "you're just a number", while cleverly disguising it as "Family Oriented". Sure, you can go pick up your kid from daycare a little early today! No problem! As long as you're available for that 12 hour day on the road where you are sitting in a van for 8 hours because we're too cheap to pay for a flight. Oh, we HAVE the money, but we'd rather spend it on increasing our image and buying failing companies. Best of all, the managers that WILL read this, will chalk it up as a disgruntled ex-employee instead of actually listening to the same concerns from their current employees. Heck, they'll probably put more effort into figuring out who wrote this, than actually making a change!

We appreciate you taking the time to voice your opinion. Since one of Karmak’s core values is to be “open and honest” we’ve respected the open dialog on Glassdoor and have refrained from replying; we recognize the value of a variety of opinions. I am sorry that you ever felt like you were “just a number,” that is certainly not our company culture. We take pride in having monthly meetings where employees are recognized for their contribution through service awards and employee of the year recognition. In addition, we are consistently reviewing our salaries against the market to stay competitive. Also, we are sorry to hear that there was a misunderstanding regarding travel. Our general policy is that if a customer location is over an eight hour drive, then a flight is recommended. In January 2017 we started paying overtime for all time spent traveling outside of business hours. We do everything we can prior to the hiring process to let candidates know which positions have heavy travel and the reality of what comes with that commitment. We continually hear from current and exiting employees that they appreciate the family oriented culture that allows great flexibility in balancing work and home life. As for the recent positive reviews, we feel that is a reflection of the new management making positive changes here at Karmak. We are very excited about the positive future that lies ahead for all current employees here at Karmak. Employees will continue to make the decision to leave for many reasons and we continue to wish every Karmakian success whether it’s here or at another employer.
