Pros

My co-workers are wonderful, it is easy to trauma bond from working here.

Cons

CEO feels the need to demean and put staff down rather than being a team player and solutions oriented. This creates a culture of fear and anxiety amongst the team which necessitates hyper-viligance to the CEO's wishes on very small and mundane issues. The CEO literally cries at almost every meeting and especially when something is not going her way. It is a manipulative tactic. I see people becoming very stressed with declining health if they do not have good boundaries which is hard to maintain. The leadership is very white and BIPOC staff are constantly insulted if English is not their first language. This organization claims to be progressive, but they are not. They do not even treat their team with dignity.

Pros

Hardworking young team and eager to learn - best set of analysts

Cons

The firm was built with no genuine set of expertise. Analysts have had to build internal knowledge and information ground-up and learn along the way by doing the work. The firm may have built solid ground in stakeholder engagement but had no real previous qualifications in what most industry leaders would qualify as economic development work. Work was initially won based on dishonest representation of the firm's skill set and expertise which made it uncomfortable being a part of any business development efforts. There was clear lack of integrity at management level. There was also a toxic culture of false urgencies set by the principal that made it common for analysts and consultants to work 10-12 hour days regularly.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Karp Strategies. We have been able to thrive and grow as a result of our hardworking analysts who take every opportunity to learn and develop new skills. Our partners are proud of the work we’ve done together in economic development, market analysis, real estate advisory, and stakeholder engagement. From day one, we have partnered with and supported city and state agencies, private developers, and nonprofits in delivering analysis and strategy, grounded in our team member’s ever-growing and evolving expertise, experience, and skills. And as our clients’ needs have evolved, so too have we. As needed over the years, we have identified the skills we needed to scale our work and have hired people with those skills and capabilities, thereby growing our full team’s skill set. For more information about our work, visit https://www.karpstrategies.com/projects-all. If you’d like to discuss any of this further, please feel free to reach out to people@karpstrategies.com. We would be more than happy to speak with you. Sincerely, Rebecca Karp

Pros

Collaborative team of young professionals who are excited to learn and go beyond expectations

Cons

The management style tends to be abusive, including false sense of urgency, lack of understanding of what a healthy balance between work and life looks like, an impolite and discourteous communication style. In several instances the services offered were misrepresented. I experienced unfair practices, such as micro aggressions and tokenism, and body shaming. Value and appreciation towards employees is not communicated. Plus, profesional development opportunities are very limited.

Thank you for your important feedback. We hope we can begin to address it here but encourage you or anyone to reach out directly to discuss anything further. At Karp Strategies, we recognize that our greatest strength is our staff. This is as true now as it was in 2021. We are proud to have a diverse staff; 78% of our leadership team members are women and 66% are people of color. We also understand we all live in a white dominant society, and are actively working within Karp Strategies to counter the effects of broader societal issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including actively working against white supremacy culture norms that permeate society and our workplaces. To that effect, since this review was written, we have undertaken the development of a comprehensive DEI strategy to actively and continuously work to execute on our values of being a multicultural, antiracist institution. This strategy is being developed with input and contributions from team members at all levels of the firm and in partnership with DEI experts. We are committed to doing the hard work to create a more inclusive and equitable environment that supports, uplifts, and empowers all of our team members, and makes space for new team members to feel excited to join us. We invite you to take a look at our website, which includes our DEI strategy and is where we will continue to share progress updates on our DEI journey (https://www.karpstrategies.com/deib). If you have any further questions about working at Karp Strategies, please feel free to reach out to people@karpstrategies.com. We would be more than happy to have a transparent conversation with you. Sincerely, Christina Blanco
