In a word, corporate.

Pros

The pros are a steady, not very challenging work schedule with a clear office policy manual. While there are a few spikes in work hours around project deadlines, the day to day is pretty predictable.

Cons

One is very likely to get put into a niche here. There are the technical people, the presentation people, the construction document people, etc. It is very difficult to get a well rounded experience. While management pays lip service to helping develop young architects, the reality is that it is not really in their best interest, and they rarely act outside their interest. A very conservative management style permeates every decision, leading to increasingly fewer new ideas in the projects themselves and a bottleneck of information that creates an inefficient workflow at the lower levels. In the end, this job will kill you with boredom, not overly demanding hours.

Pros

Great work, nice office, extremely talented group of people, a lot of resources. If you find yourself in Philadelphia this is an ok place to work and pivot somewhere else. They go out of their way to please clients and do the best work possible.

Cons

This isn’t a long-term kind of place. They have become corporate yet fail to delegate responsibility and encourage growth. Partners don't care much about the staff and don't take the time to get to know anyone. You often feel expendable. You are given little authority/autonomy and as a result many people who have been here a while become cynical. This results in a fairly toxic place to work, exaggerated by recent layoffs, slow-down in work, and other departures. People will cut-throat or throw others under the bus to get a leg up. You will be expected to work long hours and if/when you complain you will be at fault for not managing time better. You can easily make another $5-10k anywhere else in the city.

Not a great place to work

Pros

- Flexible hours - Good pay for non-architects - No micromanagement

Cons

- No opportunities to move up if you aren't an architect, even when you apply to open positions, i.e. if you're support staff, you will always be doing what you did your first week on the job no matter how much you apply yourself. - No management or management training. - Secretive senior management. - Many employees (likely emulating senior management) are unfriendly and rude, creating a very awkward and unhappy work environment.
