A Good Stepping Stone

Pros

King is a great place to work to build your resume and get your feet under you, either a first job out of college or for people rebuilding their lives (perhaps exiting jail or rehab) that need someone to take a chance on them. The CEO prides the company on being able to provide a work place for people with troubled pasts - an endearing quality. If you have a math/science brain, learning about sheet metal fabrication and electro-mechanical heater assembly is really interesting. I learned a lot from the family who owns the business and the Director of Manufacturing. The majority of people who work on the shop floor are genuine and caring people. I developed a lot of relationships I was sad to leave behind. Inside jokes, potlucks and great attitudes to push to get the work done together as a team when things get busy and hectic - you really feel like you're working with a family.

Cons

Higher ups protect others in their clique when they exhibit behavior that is morally wrong and unprofessional. Meetings that turn into "Wall Street Board Room" style communication (yelling and belittling) are overlooked and misidentified as "passionate conversations". The company is old fashioned and rather sexist, commonly referred to as the "Good Ol' Boys Club". Upper management overcorrects to perceived problems and reacts too quickly for any smooth change to take place causing whiplash and chaos - this is called the "King Swing". Employees are not empowered to 1. do the right thing and 2. make decisions on their own. Many smart people have passed through the walls of King and ultimately a lot of those people have decided to leave and it's rather unfortunate that the retention remains pretty poor. This company has shown to be rather selfish, protecting the "nest egg" for the family (owners). I do not think anything will change until the father is not involved in the business anymore.

Great place for beginners, just don't expect much mobility.

Pros

King is a great place to jumpstart your career. Whether you're fresh out of college or recently completed a rehab program, King provides an environment for you to take challenges head on and take ownership of what you do. The CEO is genuine, really cares about his employees, and works hard to ensure every worker (both in the office and on the floor) is heard. The majority of workers on the floor are genuine and strive to work as a team to get their work done. A lot of them show interest in growing and being challenged.

Cons

Member(s) of the leadership team often times overlook the accomplishments their workers have made. Their "passion" (a word used often to downplay their childish behavior) causes strife among the varying teams. The leadership team "with over 100 years of combined experience" makes gut reactions that causes confusion, chaos, and force employees down-stream to have to react quickly.

Great Place to work

Pros

This company is a place where you can learn and grow in no other way. They invest heavily in you and, as long as you are willing to learn, will be patient with you as you grow in your role. As an older company, there are many individuals who are willing to mentor and train you in all aspects of business

Cons

As a small company in a competitive industry (manufacturing in the USA), it can be challenging to keep up with the demands. However, the value of this is that you are partially responsible for the success of the company which is a characteristic that you can bring to any future opportunities.
