Great Place to Burn Out Fast

Pros

- There were some fantastic, kind, and brilliant folks that I worked alongside during my time there. - Decent health insurance.

Cons

- Lack of work/life/balance and extremely high expectations with little to no career growth. Was required to take on so much and was expected to know everything and anything with zero to minimal training/education. While being willing to “roll up your sleeves” is important, this was a lot–a lot of hard work that was rarely rewarded and/or recognized. This resulted in severe burnout, decreased performance, and dissatisfaction + faith in the company over time. It was the most rigorous work I’ve experienced since being in college, which makes me wonder if there’s something to that, as the company loves to hire young folks fresh out of college (who usually have no prior professional or related work experience to compare). - Lackluster leadership and management overall. Just because an employee excels in their role over time does not mean they are suited to move into a manager position. Conversely, some of the most dedicated, high-performing employees–with strong people skills to boot–were often overlooked for advancement. There was a noticeable presence of subjective bias and favoritism among leadership overall. - As others noted, there was a strong sense of performative progressivism; efforts often focused more on optics than genuine impact. While conversations about change were common, meaningful and lasting progress was disappointingly rare. - Compensation did not reflect the volume or intensity of the work expected.

High Demand Low Pay Chaotic

Pros

Great people, weekly food perks, beautiful office. Good place to start for entry level employees looking for experience.

Cons

Compensation is around 15-20% below market rate for similar roles if not less. High workload due to lack of experienced SMEs, low capacity in engineering since it’s difficult to hire experienced developers. Leadership lacks the ability to say no to customers and ensures a constant inflow of projects that overwhelms their engineering teams as well. Subsequently, due to low compensation there is a lack of senior developers and experienced people don’t stay very long. Previously allowed remote work two days a week but has reduced it to one. Expensive parking with a busy commute downtown. Huge disconnect between leadership and workers, lack of realism or understanding about what it takes to create a quality product. Many projects are typically half baked and rushed out the door unfinished/broken or is forgotten about in a year due to churn.

Pros

Kipsu used to be a fun workplace and could be again with major changes. The employees are supportive and collaborative despite the difficult circumstances created by severe executive mismanagement. The only strong benefits are unlimited PTO and good health insurance.

Cons

Chronic overpromising to customers leads to significant delays and a near perpetual crisis mode with one customer or another. I’m constantly missing my kids’ events because Kipsu leaders have no idea how to commit to a realistic workload for the number of people at the company. Severe burnout and extreme workloads are common in every department. Though Kipsu basically forces us to prioritize work over our families, we receive little in return: below-average pay (by leadership’s own admission), subpar benefits (aside from PTO and insurance), strict in-office requirements (they now monitor when employees come and go), and we are severely lacking in enough resources to do our jobs. Kipsu seems to value leaders who sweat the minutia, micromanage others, and pretend like everything is going really well. Kipsu is the kind of company that loves to hold meetings worrying about the placement of the deck chairs on the Titanic and then doesn't finish arranging them until the Titanic is already on the ocean floor. A damning reflection of how Kipsu is managed.
