Pros

A few, very few good people. Trying to think really hard, can't think of anything else - oh wait, free food. Yes, they give free food and that's awesome.

Cons

I joined these guys and all excited, and shortly after, I saw lot of people leaving the company. We were barely 80 people, and almost every week one or two people left. That was my red flag. As it turns out, the company doesn't have money. They haven't had funding since 2018, struggling to do anything "innovative" among the other challenges that the autonomous trucking faces anyways. I don't think these guys will make it for another year. Work life is crazy with no direction. Have worked for better startups which are more secure.

Lack of diversity and honesty

Pros

Kind and smart people. “Family” mindset in a way everyone connected well.

Cons

It’s been difficult to lay out the cons because I genuinely did love working here. Starting Dec 2019/Jan 2020 finances became a concern and it was obvious this was an issue. However leadership was not honest with us. Fast forward to pandemic times, people started to worry heavily and still no straight forward answer. Also they spent a lot of money renting out an empty office next door which was BARELY put to use even in 2019. Leasing in Mountain View is expensive so I can’t imagine how much money went towards that building. There was hardly any diversity in general. Not just ethnicity or gender wise. While everyone was nice and talented, everyone seemed pretty similar to another. In detail, many of the engineers went to the same school, similar past experiences with big companies, and most of them were white and/or men.

Pros

This is coming from just under 2 years here, seeing the highs and the lows. The major pro here is that people are really motivated and care about the company's success. I have been at 2 other AV companies and to date this company seems to be as focused on creating a viable product as they are to tech development. From my perspective leadership has been very transparent with us, we all know where we sit and what we have to accomplish. Now granted some people want to know every detail but lets face facts here, some things stay with senior leadership, its the way of the world...want to know everything, work your way up the ladder. The tech is good, again, coming from a few other AV companies this is my perspective....especially after only 2 years. The rate of progress is pretty staggering if I am being honest..but it is the same story....SW gets good...more features are implemented...SW regresses...SW gets good again after debugging....more features....SW regress...etc etc. If you aren't good with that then maybe AV ain't your game. They care, they really do. I recently had a health scare and leadership was incredible...they didn't "act" concerned, they really were concerned. To this day they STILL ask about my health and safety and my teams health and safety in every 1V1. I mean our lawyer reaches out to me to ask how my health is, does your lawyer do that in your company?

Cons

Some of the recent reviews have mentioned funding, which is the elephant in the room. AV funding is tight, COVID hasn't helped to say the least and like all Series A companies we have a set runway. This is the game though, young startups have peaks and valleys to say the least. All we can do is put our head down and work our hardest and hope it pays off. If you are not good with that then any Series A startup should be off your list, half of us are in it for the equity upside IMO. But I get if the uncertainty can weigh heavy on certain people. There have been some diversity concerns and the team I work with is fairly diverse, women, people of different races and backgrounds. Is there more white males (I am one of them)...sure, but being involved in the hiring process I haven't seen anything that raises a red flag for me. I don't hire Eng so can't speak 100% there. Budget concerns had us pull back on providing meals so that is not ideal but we still get snacks so there is that. Again, first world probs should always be kept in context.
