Pros

The kids were great to be around.

Cons

I was a teacher at a LA Promise Fund Charter school. These are my experiences. -During my interview, I was told I would be teaching 1 core subject. -During my first day of work, I told told that I would instead be teaching 5 different classes: a core class, an elective class, an advisory class, a math enrichment class, and an English enrichment class (Power Hour). It is my understanding that this will continue for the 2019-2020 year. This was a deliberate deception on LAPF’s part and set the tone for their unprofessional treatment of teachers. -I only had 3 prep periods every week. -Twice a week, I taught 3 90 minute periods and 2 60 minute periods in one school day. This was all without a prep/break period. -50% of the core 8th grade teachers left before the end of the 2018-2019 school year. -75% of their 8th grade staff did not return for the 2019-2020 school year. The middle school AP also left. -There is one single bathroom for all teachers at the 52nd St site, causing significant wait times. It was also out-of-service several times during the school year. -The 52nd Street site is an old Sunday School building. Classroom facilities and space were lacking to say the least. -Many of the administrators and staff in the lovely office building downtown have no education or teaching experience. In summary, LA Promise Fund was a horrible place to be a teacher and their staff turnover reflects this.

Lean, green, and unfocused

Pros

Very passionate and intelligent coworkers. Good connections with the community through Parent College and the Pacific Standard Time initiatives. Rewarding work that makes a difference in the lives of students and families.

Cons

Organization tries to be everything at once with a very young and very small team. Relies heavily on Americorps VISTA for support, but with extremely high turnover after 1 year. The CEO is super aggressive, super optimistic, and a force to be reckoned with if you disagree with her. The relationships with the District and the schools themselves have deteriorated in recent years. Many roles are grant funded and can dry up in a matter of months.

Well intentioned, but suffers from poor planning

Pros

-The mission -The community you are serving -Some competent, passionate, and friendly coworkers -Generous benefits for a local nonprofit of its size -Opportunities for movement within the organization, but very much depends on where in the organization you sit

Cons

-Often seems like the organization is caught flat footed and reacts to situations instead of proactively planning, including very predictable issues -Compensation for some positions is not adequate for the amount of work required, whereas others are overpaid for twiddling their thumbs -Depending on the department, your team could be severely understaffed -Those who are either incompetent or just unpleasant coworkers are usually the loudest voices in the room and therefore allowed to just coast -Leadership often lacks direction and strategy, usually ocusing on putting out fires
