Pros

1. Mostly very personable, mature and friendly colleagues. 2. The YL course is a joy to teach 3. Nice students, friendly and competent TAs 4. Lovely, dedicated Senior teachers who do their best to support their staff. 5. The salary used to be pretty OK with nice benefits.

Cons

There's been a change in higher management that has wrought complete havoc on the company and totally destroyed everything that was good and pure about this place. To start off, there was a covert purge of Filipino teachers who were sneakily pushed out of their jobs by the company refusing to renew their contracts or cutting their hours with no warning. Most supervisory positions have been eliminated both in operations and academic. This means that there are constant issues with miscommunication with the VNese staff(who truly try their best) - tests are not being printed on time, registers are filled in wrong, or go missing, oftentimes there are no support staff available to help print something, no CDs, or you get the wrong CD, lost tests, random make-up tests that need to suddenly be marked weeks after a class had ended, random students wandering into class because there was no one to show them where to go etc, etc. On the academic side there is only one senior teacher per centre, so if something goes wrong when they're not there because they're in a meeting at a different location or on their day off - you're on your own. The new management seems not to care whatsoever about professional development, whereas before we used to have monthly PD workshops. The centres are filthy, the resources are old and tired, there are a few smartboards/ computers, but they do not work and are impossible for the kids to use (placed way too high on the wall, a medium-sized adult would need to jump to touch the top part of the smartboard) I used to really enjoy working at LLV when I started out a few years ago, but in the last six months it's really gone into a deathspiral of forced top-down decisions, which has killed all morale, any feeling of being a valued member of a team, and any chance that I would ever recommend this place to anyone.

Pros

Decent hours and always a fun and disciplined atmosphere among the students.

Cons

Don’t believe all the hype that you hear from their “positive reviews” that have been written and rewritten by management on a few occasions as they are trying to persuade you that they are not sly and they are good to hide their previous misdeeds and mishandlings of their prior actions and intentions. This company is currently under investigation and facing lawsuits due to multiple incidents that are dated back from 2013-2018 as this probably won’t be their first or last. Before you sign any contracts, make sure you read up on all of The Vietnamese Labor Laws, Contracts, and everything else that they give to you before signing anything as you will know exactly what to do when they consciously start violating you and therefore go beyond the Vietnamese Labor Laws in the process. A small number of violations include: 1. Privileged westerners in positions making threats of violence to minorities as this stimulates from pure jealousy and envy as this is an educational institution for parents to bring their innocent children that are supposed to come to the center to learn English as a 2nd language as privileged westerners in position are trying to turn Language Link Vietnam into, "The Wild Wild West." 2. Privileged westerners in positions bringing minorities into rooms 1 on 1 behind closed doors in what is supposed to be MANDATORY performance evaluations ONLY to be discussing the fatalities of minorities in America among police shootings while the privileged westerner in position says, "I know that's a messed up way to build a rapport." Furthermore, the privileged westerner talks about bringing security guards in the room at the same time in the beginning of the meeting as if minorities are a threat. And to top it all off as this is the first time ever to "introduce" and to have a MANDATORY "meeting" with the privileged westerner in position, their are talks to fire the minority as the privileged westerner in position apologizes to the minority with his head down as he shakes his head from left to right and just continues to talk on and on and on while his hands are shaking while the minority sits there quietly and listens. 3. Privileged westerners in positions telling minorities 1 on 1 behind closed doors in MANDATORY meetings that, “You are the younger version of me back then.” “You are a team player.” “You are ambitious.” You have to wait your turn." "Anyone can do what you did." “It feels so good to be around you.” 4. Privileged westerners in positions having MANDATORY private meetings for degrading credibility directly to minorities and to scold their personal achievements behind closed doors. 5. Going inside the locker of minority teachers and replacing their teaching materials with toilet paper and laughing about it when confronted. 6. Privileged westerners in positions and HR giving mixed evaluations on the same exact evaluation. For example: A privileged westerner in a position telling you to your face that you “passed” but does not give you the teacher evaluation report. Then the privileged westerner discusses with HR that you “did not pass” as HR is in on this as well. Not to mention that HR is sending out CCed emails among your colleagues to discuss that you “did not pass” and is saying that you “cannot get a raise.” 7. Imagine that the privileged westerner in a position looks you in the eyes and tells you that, "Observations are meant to be negative and that you will not get any observations this year." Following that comment, imagine that you get a surprise observation the next following day. 8. Privileged westerners in positions using rhetoric to encourage colleagues to marginalize, bully, pick sides, and physically fight instead of working as a cohesive team as certain colleagues that hang around management are easily persuaded and influenced by positions of power without objectively looking for motives as the thinking is herd-like and can be easily manipulated as the privileged westerner in position plays victim while the threats and abuse continue on for the minority teacher. And when threats are made verbally by privileged westerners in positions of power and those being surrounded, then minorities must find ways to protect themselves by any means necessary as teachers are role-models and they should never have to think about their safety in such a safe country with lovely and friendly people and in a company where innocent kids go to learn as this goes beyond violating dignity which is in The Vietnamese Labor Laws. 9. Imagine that colleagues that have surrounded themselves with those in management are getting in your face in saying, "We were just playing with you!" In addition, imagine that the colleague points his fingers to the back of your head as he makes a gun gesture while you got your back turned. And from the moment you turn around, he puts his hands down. How would you protect yourself then? How would you protect yourself in a company that parents trust to send their innocent children to go learn English? 10. When these situations took place, an email was sent to HR about the incidents. Nobody in HR asked questions or replied back to the email. As long as parents did not find out, they were ok with anything that happened as they allowed these behaviors to continue. The only time HR replied back was on a separate email when a Vietnamese Labor Law violation had been caught up on their end. 11. Never dealt with these ideologies on racism, racial profiling, or discrimination in Vietnam until these situations at this company happened as these are not the only incidents within the company that took place as these incidents clearly violate The Vietnamese Labor Laws as these close-minded ideologies come from privileged westerners that move to Vietnam as those set of ideas and beliefs get embedded into the company as they are supported from the top and trickle down through others. The only time questions such as, “How hard is it to be ‘a certain race’ living in Vietnam” come up, is when you enter into Language Link Vietnam. Otherwise, you just don’t get those types questions in Vietnam. This is not a company based on fairness or education, but based on The Wild Wild West. 12. And if you think that this is company based on fairness or education, then continue to allow toxic privileged westerners in positions to call your kids, “stupid” outside of class. 13. You still think this company is based on fairness or education? Imagine that you are in another MANDATORY meeting and you are told that "65% of Vietnamese are boring and aren't going to go anywhere in life." Without having any empathy or compassion for all of the challenges that they had to face in the past. 14. With all the reasons stated above to include reasons that are not even stated, it's no wonder why minority teachers don't come to the company unless it was MANDATORY. 15. Lastly, privileged positions of power are STILL allowed to be maintained and kept despite all of this.

Pros

Great materials pay on time good kids

Cons

Lack of professionalism. This company is very far behind in developing their teachers to become better both personally on a mature level and professionally as the behavior shows up in management. Getting wasted, petty-minded issues, and gossip are the priority. Personalities are often secretly silenced out of fear and insecurity among Management and bad character, negative behavior, and poor judgement runs amok and flourishes in the company among Management as they impose double standards. If you don't silence your personality and don't get acquainted with the judgment and narrative of what they want you to be to satisfy their ego and comfort zones, then Management will start harassing and annoying you in childlike ways and will cause numerous intentional conflicts in your work environment simply because you did not fall in line with the personality that they wanted you to be as if you are supposed to be hired to serve a different purpose outside of teaching and outside of your contract. Lack of taking full responsibility and accountability for their own reckless negligence, actions, positions, and behavior among management is normal. Definitely a high school and popularity contest feeling in this company instead of getting the job done and doing it well. Unfortunately, it seems like Management is incompetent and don't really know how to properly manage and lead people as everything is focused and centered around trivial and childish issues. Your students in all of your classes put together may only cause 10% of all of your behavioral issues and problems while Management will cause 90% as you wouldn't expect fully grown adults who are supposed to be role models to lose their personal bearings and act worse than the combination of all of your kids that are put into all of your classes. When you come here, professionalism and ethical behavior gets thrown out the window. Just because the company is growing and pays on time does not mean that it is going to help you grow and develop you and your skills on a professional level. When you finish the company, don’t ask yourself, how have you grown as a teacher. You can learn anything from anybody. And you certainly don’t need a manager or academic coordinator to teach you how to get drunk. Ask yourself, how have you grown as a professional. They use certain hidden tactics that is not easy to spot, but the end results always causes harm to the company further down the road like pitting people against each other, illegal and unlawful practices due to immaturity and ignorance, and dog whistling tactics to cover up, distract, and divert the attention of what some of those in Management are hiding and doing as a way to distract the teachers that are constantly complaining about their pay or teachers complaining about management and looking down on them. And some of that behavior among management is due to a multitude of things to include personal insecurities, pure boredom, wanting an increase in status growth, poor character judgement, and attention seeking from peers as some of them don't have enough work to do or don't feel like they have enough entertainment in their life. It seems like management tries to do everything they can to hire people and teachers overseas that are new. Management will plan to have a high turnover rate at the end of the year so that they don't have to make pay increases to 2-3 year teachers as staying past 2 years for a teacher is very rare in this company. Recruitment may show you a pay chart for teachers staying 3 to 5 years, but the number of teachers trying to reach that goal and being able to stay is less than 10% because the company does not want to make pay increases. However, the recruiters telling you how much you will make per an hour after taxes is another elusive question that they try to avoid. Visa Flight run to another country will be fully taken care of as they say, but it will be taxed and not fully reimbursed. And for heaven sakes, this is all for a $20 an hour teaching job after tax and after travel bonuses working mostly between 1-3 hours a day, 3 to 5 days a week in which you may have to travel past 7-20 kilometers in dangerous traffic just to get to your school to teach as there have been numerous traffic accidents on the job. In traffic, it will take atleast 1 to 1.5 hours to get there and 1 to 2 hours just to go home. Yet, they do all this unnecessary and avoidable stuff for $20 an hour teaching. Is it worth it? You do the math and see for yourself. To simplify it, by the time you plan the lesson, teach, and travel, you will be getting paid between $2 to $5 per an hour. And don't forget to double-check the errors that will be in your salary each and every month.
