Toxic Sales Department at Detroit Lakes Station

Pros

The actual broadcast and engineering staff are top-notch, professional and friendly. They, sadly, have absolutely no control over content or management, which is mostly handled by inexperienced, under-qualified sales staff who burned out from other industries.

Cons

The Sales team is completely toxic. I had a job all lined up after I left and (stupidly) let slip where. The day before I started my new job, I received a call that they don't want me as an employee. I was completely stonewalled by HR. I poked and prodded around and found out from a different department that someone on the Leighton sales team said something about me to HR and that's when they made the decision to terminate me - before I had even started my first day no less! I have since applied unsuccessfully at other jobs in the area where, in two cases, the HR department flat-out told me that the Leighton Sales team convinced them I was a toxic hire. All I did was a few hours of work every week that they didn't want to do themselves. They told me it was going to turn into a full-time, properly-paid position that made use of my talents and experience. When that didn't happen after months and months I moved on. That must have insulted someone at Leighton because they made sure that I was blacklisted at every single local business that they have an advertising contract with. Obviously, I consider this extremely unprofessional. Maybe even vulgar. My advice to anybody considering working for Leighton is this: don't work there unless you want to work there forever or plan to move out of the tri-county area after you quit. Leighton Broadcasting will poison your resume and your career prospects. Ambitious career-oriented young people should avoid at all costs!

Declining company

Pros

The job is fun. It offers flexibility with life. You get to meet a lot of new people.

Cons

The company is steadily declining. A lot of employees are truly out of touch when it comes to marketing techniques in today’s age. There are a lot of unfair aspects of the job as well and men are treated differently than women. Your salary is quickly taken away from you without warning on year 3, and it’s nearly impossible to make a living off radio commissions.

Pass on working for Detroit Lakes office

Pros

None available at this time

Cons

Don’t buy into the promise of “family” company and state of the art facility. Not worth it. This branch is lost at sea. No leadership, hands-off management, cruel sales staff. Profits before people. Poor pay. Goes through on-air staff very quickly except for the good ol’ boys because people realize the stress, bullying and running for pennnys isn’t worth it.
