Pros

For the most part, the actual people that do the work and the projects at Lifeblue are TOP NOTCH and some of the highest quality of human being and talent you will find. They work hard, deliver and have your back. They make work feel like family. They are the best part of this company. Genuinely great employees!

Cons

The leadership paints a pretty picture of putting their people first, but when it comes down to the moments that matter, they fail. Big time. Expect to work a lot without proper management or career guidance or direction. If you're looking for any type of structure towards opportunity or individual growth, look elsewhere. They may claim to have an answer for that, but I would be cautious of it and be sure to ask questions on how that has been successful for others in the past. Get examples. Beware of them "selling" you on the response. At the end of the day, most of the leadership team isn't equipped to support employees. Also, if you are a woman planning to have children during your time there, know they don't have a good track record for keeping women after their maternity leave. They do have a nice 3 months paid mat leave, but then somehow maternity leave seems to be a time for job evaluation, restructuring and for the woman gone to be blamed for things that have gone wrong in their absence. You are essentially pushed out through one way or another. I don't want to believe they are doing this on purpose, but they also aren't paying attention to their pattern either. To give an actual stat, 4 out of 5 women who have recently had children while there no longer work there. All in all, I wouldn't say my time there did much for my career. I made some amazing friends and learned what I don't like in a company and manager. So there is still value in that.

"The Lifeblue Way" - Aka, Rampant Unprofessionalism

Pros

I can honestly say that some of the most talented developers, art directors, and creative/UX experts I've ever had the pleasure of working with are here. Unfortunately, they have been sold on the elusive "Lifeblue Way", or are too afraid to question it. Which, ultimately means two of the three partners can do or say whatever it is they feel like, and it be considered the "Lifeblue Way". It's a shame the third partner has been pushed out, he was seemingly a really good guy.

Cons

First and foremost, the fact that one of the three partners of the agency (of 10 people in total) has an inappropriate relationship with one of the married employees brings an awkwardness rivaled by that of only the most extreme cases. Favoritism is rampant toward this employee, and nothing she says can be proven wrong despite her complete lack of knowledge on most topics. Challenge this, or try to call out the fact that it is unprofessional to have such a relationship, and you will be immediately let go without cause. If you try to bring in any new ideas on how to make the office better, get ready to be shot down. This office is cool, but very small. The fact that 30% of a company which openly refuses to grow beyond 10 people are "partners" should be more than you need to know about the agency. The last thing they would like to happen is to lose any bit of power or control over the agency by growing too large. Having come from agencies both small and large, this place easily holds the title of "Worst Office Politics" of them all. Again, none of this comes from the developers or the people putting in the long hours (yes, weekends included). Rather, it comes directly from two of the three partners. If they don't agree with what you're saying, or if you remotely challenge one particular employee, you're out. Immediately. This has happened several times now. The aforementioned partner who believes it's acceptable to openly bring infidelity into the workplace has scammed his way from being a client of Lifeblue's into a fully-fledged partner. He has absolutely ZERO agency experience, yet bought his way into being a partner. When asked about not having any experience in the space, his only response has ever been "I've read several books on it." Quite the leader, indeed. As with so many others who have reviewed, I put quite a bit of my heart and soul into this place, believing things could be great. However, it was never enough, and regardless of the extreme workload, the only feedback was ever, "You need to do more to follow the 'Lifeblue Way'". The pay is as expected for such a small shop. Truly disappointing all around.

I Came Back!

Pros

I originally left LB, but after a couple years we made nice. A lot has changed (including a few personnel), and a lot of the older reviews (I wrote one of them) aren't really applicable anymore. I wasn't sure about some of the changes at first, but that was unwarranted: they really put their hearts and minds into it and with honestly great results. - They've managed a magical mixture of the stability and fairness of Corporate in payscales/bonus structures and professional development while maintaining the culture and humanity of startups. - Work-life balance is not a struggle - they've put a lot of effort into proper staffing. - The environment is professional in that there is consistent and constant respect (both top-down and bottom-up), but it's not stifled or dead-on-the-inside. And things that are still as true as ever: - Everyone is happy to help anyone. The people really are incredible, and LB fosters their flourishing. - Interesting work with high visibility. My friends use sites that I've made without realizing it. - It's still odd describing some perks/events that seem natural to me and mindboggling to outsiders. I don't have the dread of penny-pinching PTO when I want a "recovery" day from my vacation, because it's unlimited. LB has a Family Day, where we all hit up a bowling alley/arcade with... our families! All in all, LB trusts, respects, and empowers its employees to do great work and enjoy their lives, and we do!

Cons

There are around 30 people, so there aren't a lot of obvious ways to provide unlimited upward mobility in strictly traditional management. But despite that there is a strong mentorship program developing and clear roadmaps for professional development/growth for each individual, which, for me anyway, is the meat and satisfaction of upward mobility. They put a lot of thought into addressing this, and I give them a lot of credit for what they came up with.
