Pros

You'll be helping people who really need it. You will be trained in CPR and CPI. You will meet people who care a lot for the community.

Cons

Management is terrible. Pay rate is terrible. You have a hell of a lot responsibilities but get paid as much as someone who flips burgers at a fast food joint.

Pros

They pay decently. Good benefits.

Cons

You will be overworked. You will not be supported when problems arise - and problems will arise. The general attitude at this employer is "Our way or the highway." In my last 5 months at LIFEDesigns, I was doing the responsibilities of 3 positions (Admin. Assistant, Training Coordinator, Office Manager) and the workload of at least 2 employees. Despite 18 dedicated years with this employer, when stress was piled on and I tried to address grievances with superiors, they said "good bye" instead of any attempt to come to a compromise. Only gluttons for punishment should apply to this failing agency.

Pros

Working with individuals who have disabilities gave me so many opportunities in life. I created some of the best bonds with the clients I provided care for. You do get reimbursed for mileage, any events that you have to pay to get into, PTO, and defiantly guaranteed 40 hours.

Cons

The office is just like high school all over again. Nothing but gossip. Staff are over worked incredibly too much. If a staff works 8:00 am - 8:00 pm at a setting and the overnight staff calls in or does not show up, if nobody else can come in then that staff who was just there for 12 hours now has to stay all night WHICH are to be awake overnight shifts, creating the shift to turn into a 24 hour. The staff to client ratio is not okay. The agency needs to put a hold on taking clients in because they simply do not have staff at this moment. Team Managers log AT LEAST 65-70 hours A WEEK. That is not healthy. These people have lives and family they wish to be involved in, but are forced to work because there is nobody to help out. Even when they have an evening off, they are still on call and expected to report to work if something were to happen. Some managers are given two 24 hour settings. How can somebody balance day and night open shifts? Staff need to have a certain amount of hours off before they can report to a shift again after working so long. It is not fair to the Team Managers who get stuck working day shifts on top of overnights to have to come back into the office to take care of bills or something for the clients. THEY NEED TIME OFF TO SLEEP. You have to be able to take care of yourself first before taking care of OTHERS!!

We recognize that many team managers have worked a lot of hours. We began tracking average hours earlier this year and have made focused changes that have reduced average hours for team managers significantly over the past few months. The current average is closer to 45. We hired a scheduling manager that looks across all settings to balance overtime as equally as possible. We all realize that this field is one with higher turnover across the country. Lifedesigns is striving to make changes to professionalize the position of direct support. We have increased wages to be the highest in the area for new employees and have developed educational opportunities that will allow a DSP to become nationally credentialed through National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals. The field of direct support and care is the growing rapidly and is there is great growth potential in the future. We are hoping to provide those growth opportunities for people so they can make this a career with a good living wage and benefits and a good work-life balance.
