A company that's going nowhere fast

Pros

Motivated students with interesting jobs and a real need for English. Friendly, helpful colleagues. You learn a lot about business from your students.

Cons

Sadly, a clique of indifferent managers has risen to the top by virtue of staying around the longest, and not because of any leadership qualities or competence. Their primary aims seems to be protecting the status quo fiercely (what else would they do?) to the detriment of the business. Some ex-teachers say they were bullied or forced out when they queried some of management's dubious practices, the onerous travel, long hours and poor pay. Real advancement opportunities are slim and favouritism rife. Unpaid internal training is mandatory and has more to do with maintaining the corporate identity than any meaningful teacher development. Wages haven't gone up in years - at least for teachers...

Linguarama Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and firstly very sorry to hear that you are so unhappy working in the Cologne office, particularly as you have worked there for 3 - 4 years on a part time basis. As it sounds like you are still working there it would be helpful for management if you could discuss your concerns with them directly, especially as you feel that staff have been bullied, which is disappointing to hear. All Linguarama offices were affected by the Covid restrictions, which meant that face to face training was not possible for a period of nearly two years. This necessitated a push to ensure that all staff had the right skills to teach online, which was more difficult for some staff than others. I have shared your comments with the Cologne centre manager.

Bad management and environment

Pros

Potentially it would be a stimulating and enjoyable job, but there are too many downsides in management and in the environment.

Cons

Bad management of information flow (complicated, often absent). Rigidity in the hierarchies, but at the same time uncertainty about who does what and who is in charge (not an attentive manager and colleagues who try to overtake him). No collaboration between colleagues (pass the buck, not sharing information, absence of communication), no intention to create a team. Favouritism and marked inequality of treatment (both for freelance teachers and for internal staff). No recognition for the good work done and constant underlining of the negative aspects (sometimes futile), which generates dissatisfaction and lack of motivation. Constant rejection of improvement/growth proposals. Bad management of employees and business in general by the manager. Alienating and poisoning environment, no empathy from management. Employees don't have decisional power. Low salaries.
