Literacy Action expects a lot of dedication and commitment and a lot more work than could be accomplished during my paid hours. I freely gave both because I loved the students. The problem is that the school has no commitment to its employees.
I was laid off for financial reasons, along with the other part-timers. There was no attempt to make sure that the laid-off teachers were called back before new openings were made public. Initially both the students and I were told that the part-timers were just to be furloughed for the summer term and would be back in the fall, but it was clear that there was really no intention to make that happen.
