"Overwhelm" is the accepted normal.

Pros

The agents at Living Room are some of the best in the business. Courteous, generous, and it was a joy to serve them every day. The team I worked directly within was supportive and capable, and always went the extra mile to make sure everyone was supported in their workloads.

Cons

In the end it came down to a lack of accountability for management to create solutions for disturbances within the company. A lack of formal reviews, inconsistent feedback of performance, and a very high turnover of coworkers made it feel like it was impossible to have a grasp on what constitutes a "job well done." If issues arose, there were very little options for accountability, and management was unresponsive or downright dismissive of feedback. No HR resources for staff, and it seemed that managers were not actually given the autonomy to take care of their people. The feeling of being "overwhelmed" is considered an accepted normal, and the company benefit of unlimited PTO was often used as an excuse to not give wage increases. A convoluted and inconsistent bonus structure created confusion and the policies around performance-based, time-based, or cost-of-living wage reassessments are infrequent and not guaranteed. The turnover for the Membership Services Coordinator position is astounding. In two years, the position was filled by over a dozen different people, only two of which currently remain. There are 4 offices and one employee of this position in each office.

Pros

I think the leadership has good intentions. Their heart is in the right place for the most part. Great agents working there. Unlimited paid time off is great BUT has to be set up by staff working with each other with no good leadership or direction on how to do that.

Cons

Staff are overworked and underpaid and not respected. Very limited mobility or growth opportunities within the company. Agents are independent contractors so, while a staff person gets to work with them they are not employed by Living Room Realty. The W2 employees are treated like second class citizens by the owner and leadership team. Even the agents have noticed it and tried to intervene. The owner promises excellent work life balance but piles on way more work than can actually be accomplished and then penalizes staff when they try to balance sitting at front desk to answer phones with picking up office, handling marketing, servicing agent needs and running personal errands for the owners. They are paid for basic secretarial serviced but are actually executive assistants to agents, real estate marketing experts, contract collection and oversight and a hundred other specialty skills. In fact employees have been fired for not doing a good job when the agents (who are the only ones who interact with the staff on a daily basis) have reported glowing reviews on the effectiveness and responsiveness of the staff. The staff person was fired BECAUSE the agents suggested that the staff needed more equitable pay to match their level of expertise and commitment to quality.

Pros

The agents at Living Room are great to work with: they are kind, creative, generous, and fun. The staff while I was there was also a great team who supported one another and helped each other to grow and achieve. Unlimited PTO allows staff to take sick days without fear of running out, and to go on vacation occasionally.

Cons

Management is more concerned with image than with integrity, and doesn't respond well to criticism, feedback, or requests for support from staff. There is no HR or structure for advancement, and staff are expected to be grateful enough to work for Living Room that they don't ask for formal reviews or performance or cost-of-living raises. Pay is low and the "unlimited time off" policy is used as a stand-in for all other benefits. Staff are universally overworked and undermanaged. Chaos is the driving force.
