A failing company

Where to even begin... - 4 rounds of layoffs in just over year's time is a huge red flag. Doubly so when they've had nearly 100% turnover in the finance team. * - With few exceptions, the senior exec team are ineffectual, which is not surprising given that a majority of them work less than 30 hours a week. * - The CEO seems oddly proud of the fact that in the 10 years that the company has existed, they have never been profitable. This becomes an issue when they're now making a push towards profitability (the mandate of the investors) and it seems like no one in the company knows how to do that. * - Toxic positivity infests the company from the top down. * - The workload has been absolutely grueling as more and more employees have been laid off and their positions made redundant and next to no hiring taking place. * - They invest in systems more than they invest in people. * - Despite "Kind" being one of the company's core values, on more than one occasion they have laid off an employee who was out on parental leave. That is a despicable and shameful act and is the antithesis of "kind". * - They appear to incentivize employees to leave glowing reviews here as you can see every time a negative review is made, within days 2-3 glowing reviews pop up. I'm sure this is probably the norm for corporations, but it's obvious and, frankly, kind of sleazy.

We appreciate you taking the time to voice your opinion and we are sorry that you have been impacted by the recent structural reorganisation. It’s understandable that this may have had an emotional impact on you and whilst we endeavour to look after our alumni as best as we possibly can, it is still regretful that business decisions such as these have to be made. We agree that each round of reduction in force has not been easy on the business and is sorely felt by the whole team. We have not made those decisions easily and are sad for those people whose roles are no longer needed. The recent restructure and associated redundancies have been a direct result of completing the phased work to integrate two businesses after LoveCrafts acquired WEBS/yarn.com. This simply means we no longer have the need for some roles as we have combined processes and tech and found efficiencies across the business - a fairly typical outcome for mergers and acquisitions, which we have always been transparent about. These changes, combined with turbulent economic times post COVID, means we have taken the opportunity to further streamline what we do to really focus on trading, reducing the need for some work within the business. These changes are intended to lighten the load on our employees who continue to be the great Smart Kind Makers they always are and who have worked tirelessly to make sure the business has a promising future. Some of our competitors have not been so lucky and haven’t survived. We believe in our Smart Kind Maker values and truly aspire to uphold them in everything we do. Part of that includes the desire to support anyone across the business to work flexibly where they have the need to - this extends to our Leadership Team and we are proud to be a supportive environment for many working parents and caregivers, who work reduced hours. There are many aspects of our culture that we believe have been misinterpreted in your feedback- yet if you had raised these concerns while in position, we would have delighted in the opportunity to discuss them and have you be part of any solutions. That said, we never want someone to be unhappy at work and hope this redundancy and financial support gives you the opportunity to take time out to find a workplace that brings you joy.

Pros

Cake and some nice people.

Cons

Management is not interested in the welfare of staff. HR creates all these superficially amazing benefits like parties and cake day and health insurance which try to cover the fact that some entire team do not get pay rises for 2.5 years and then only a small 3% rise which is nothing on a salary of £22 000. The company went from a nice friendly start up to a place driven by the money hungry eyes of the members of the board.

Great people, terrible leadership

* High quality benefits package * Employee discounts * Passionate and caring coworkers * Great company culture * Fun socials and get-togethers

Cons

* CEO constantly overpromises and underdelivers. * 3 rounds of reduction in force in one year is a bad sign * Communication from the top down rarely, if ever happens, in any meaningful way even despite fortnightly company-wide meetings * Leadership of the company are failing and yet still in their positions while they make redundancies of the backbone of the company. * All of the reductions in force have made the workload extreme and nearly unbearable.

Thank you for the feedback. It would be great to sit and talk this over with you in person. We agree that each round of reduction in force has not been easy on the business and is sorely felt by the whole team. We have not made those decisions easily. In light of turbulent economic times post COVID, we have had to make decisions that enabled our business to survive- some of our competitors have not been so lucky and haven’t survived. We are streamlining our goals to lighten the load on our employees who continue to be the great Smart Kind Makers they always are and who have worked tirelessly to make sure the business has a promising future.
