Pros

Staff has some very talented individuals who were very nice to work with.

Cons

The CEO/Owner Dr. Joel Schlessinger is a micromanager who intimidates and publicly embarrasses employees resulting in culture of fear. He regularly hires very young people he can treat this way and has a very high turnover rate because of it. Dr. Schlessinger's reputation is also very poor in his industry. He spends a good amount of money in online reputation management and often pressures his employees to leave positive reviews online to counter-balance real views. Even many of the reviews on his own skin care site are manufactured. Do not trust the positive reviews here or elsewhere. They likely came from him and his staff. I know many good people who have left the company quickly and gone on to be successful elsewhere. Lovely Skin is a horrible place to work.

We thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. Although your time at LovelySkin was short, we’re always disappointed when an employee leaves under such undesirable circumstances. We take enormous pride in a culture which values integrity, inclusion and intellectual honesty. It’s our duty to remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold these ideals and to provide a safe and professional environment, free of harassment, for all LovelySkin team members. We’re saddened your behavior was not in keeping with these standards. We will never tolerate racism or harassment in our workplace, so it should come as no surprise that you were terminated. If you'd like to discuss this in further detail, please feel free to reach out at (402) 697-6568.

Toxic CEO and Company Culture

Pros

I enjoyed working with my colleagues, who are some of the most talented, hard-working and genuinely good people I’ve ever met.

Cons

As a former employee who has since left LovelySkin for far greener pastures, I feel an obligation to warn those considering accepting a job offer from this company. First, every negative comment you’ll read on Glassdoor and elsewhere regarding Joel Schlessinger’s coercive, overbearing “management style” is true—don’t make the mistake of signing on to have this person be your boss. Surely there are worse out there, but I can say unequivocally that he is the worst I’ve ever had. No matter which department you work in, he’s there over your shoulder (often literally, with cameras), interjecting bad ideas while making your job needlessly stressful, so at the end of the day you don’t feel good about yourself or the work you’ve done. There are many examples (too many) of Joel Schlessinger’s unethical business practices and utterly bizarre behavior unbecoming of a CEO that I would love to share in this review, but Glassdoor recommends sticking to your opinion rather than listing facts to support that opinion. As I would have a difficult time proving what I know to be true by years of firsthand experience and observation, I’ll just say that Joel Schlessinger’s actions reflect his mindset and his company culture: that he’s the smartest guy in the room, that he doesn’t trust you to do the job he hired you to do, and that he will lie to anyone (customers, vendors, and employees alike) if he thinks it will get him ahead. My advice to potential employees: keep searching, because you can do much better. My advice to my former colleagues: you’re better than LovelySkin. Joel Schlessinger doesn’t deserve your efforts, nor does he deserve to be a business owner. Thinking back on my time at LovelySkin, it makes me feel ill that I contributed, even in a small way, to this man’s success.

Toxic environment

Pros

The small web staff was made up of talented and hardworking people. Frequent onsite product training led by vendors.

Cons

Toxic environment, constant micromanaging of nearly every employee by the domineering president (self-christened "CEO") of the company, high staff turnover (many employees did not last the three-month probation period), unreasonable expectations, controlling policies (e.g. 30-minute lunch breaks during an eight-hour shift were discouraged).
