Pros

I spent the first 5 years (2014-2019) of my employment with the Kalamazoo office and had a really lovely experience. I had such a supportive supervisor and colleagues who I could trust and count on for anything. I would give the company 4.5 stars based only on my experience with the kzoo office. There’s a lot of stress and moral dilemmas with this job and good people in the workplace make all the difference. Lots of paid time off and flexibility!! I was able to have a fully paid 12 week maternity leave with my banked pto and was so thankful.

Cons

Low pay (it’s social work). My last years with the company (2019-2021) was with the Grand Rapids office. My coworkers were lovely as well but leadership was miserable. My Supervisor had very little consistency in what she wanted in a reports. I sought advice from those who had been there longer than I and all said that the expectations for how things should be worded or formatted was all over the place and changed with the wind. Boundaries in the workplace were poor and negatively impacted my ability to feel comfortable. For an example: early in my employment with the Grand Rapids office, I was meeting with my supervisor for monthly supervision. She asked me one on one if I was pregnant. I said I was not. Rather than let it go, she kept pushing, telling me that she had a dream about it and gets “senses” when people are pregnant. Wanting to shut down the conversation ASAP, I explained that my husband and I struggle with infertility and if I was pregnant, I would know as it would cost me tens of thousands of dollars. Rather than apologizing or letting it go, she continued on saying that “maybe you are just REALLY early and don’t know” because “I’m always right about it.” Weird! As a new employee, I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt that it was just an off day but it was the first of many awkward encounters. They really struggle with acknowledging and celebrating their employees. At one point 6 years into employment, I was called into my supervisor’s office and was given a knit hat with the company logo on it. It was an “award of appreciation” for those with 5+ years of service. Nice gesture I guess but it came with a warning to “lay low about it” and “not flaunt it around others who wouldn’t get one”. Again, bizarre. I obliged, only wearing it in the privacy of my own home away from jealous eyes.

Pros

Supportive team members, great training that prepares you for work in the field, opportunity to do work that truly matters.

Cons

As social workers we tend to have an idea about how things should be, and can get caught up in frustration when those ideas are not manifested in the day to day. Focusing on the negative does not bring about positive change.

Pros

The work environment at Lutheran Adoption Service is flexible and fun. All of the workers there are great and people genuinely care about the kids we serve.

Cons

The work can be emotionally stressful and there always seems to be more to do. Also, the pay is not the greatest in the field.
