Pros

MISO employees some fantastic people doing interesting work. They also have great benefits, including an onsite health clinic.

Cons

Wow. Where to start...…. 1. Executive Management: So far removed from the work people are doing on a daily basis that they are unable to appropriately prioritize or offer support to the divisions they are responsible for. They are quick to latch onto the latest buzz phrase, but do not have the foresight or the ability to actually implement anything. Instead, they dream up one initiative after the other that never comes to fruition. Finally, with sadly few exceptions, executives are unapproachable and completely egotistical. 2. HR: HR is anything and everything BUT a resource for employees. Want the latest gossip? Befriend someone in HR. Want a promotion but don't want to work for it? Befriend someone in HR. Want to stall your career? Be above the office politics and do your work - there is no time for that at MISO. You better be prepared to schmooze. Most hilarious (read - pitiful, pathetic, and sad) is that HR leadership will not even speak to you if you are not in management or have been placed on the management track. WOW. 3. Middle Management: There are actually a few gems in this group. Sadly, they are overworked, understaffed, and their leadership likely does not understand how to support them. Far too many people are in management at MISO because they managed to befriend the right people, not ask any uncomfortable questions, and learned how to parrot the latest buzz phrase being espoused by executive management even if they have no idea how to implement it or what it means. Few of these folks will actually go to bat for their teams - those who do are quickly shown the door. 4. Compliance: Oh, compliance, my friend. MISO does not really care about it - it is something MISO carefully sculpts and crafts a perception around. They do not want to know how big the problems are or how they should be fixed. What is the MINIMUM we can do and get away with? And on top of the already monumental issues this company has with compliance, they decided to put a leadership team in place that is more concerned with making sure that they are surrounded with "yes people" and those who will never question, identify issues, or (gasp) be more effective than they are (which, truly, is not that hard.)

Pros

MISO employees truly want to make an impact. This is offset by the fact that their talents are often stifled or undervalued by those whose egos are too big to let others succeed. Remodeling work in the building is giving an aging building a fresh and exciting new look. You have the opportunity to work with professionals from other organizations who are thought leaders. If you are woo'd by the possibilities here, plan on a short stay before you get too sucked into the negativity. If you're an intern, this is absolutely the place to be - they treat interns great! Take the three months to get the experience and then find a job elsewhere in the industry.

Cons

At one time MISO was THE place to be in the energy industry - excellent pay and benefits, interesting work, and a challenging, yet supportive environment. That has all changed - pay and benefits are ho-hum compared to other organizations, the good old boys club is alive and well here, and leadership is viewed as the person who can throw the most people under the bus (so much for the "getting the right people on the bus in the right seats" philosophy). Having a leadership team in place with deep experience outside of MISO will help mature the leadership team and get the organization back on track. You've refreshed the other levels. Now it's your turn as the problems haven't gone away. Stop with the games. This is a workplace full of professional adults. The organization is way too small for the amount of political games that get played. Leadership is about authenticity - give it a shot. Arrogance - an earlier reviewer took offense to the number of negative reviews and encouraged those reviewers to spend some time with the superstars to better understand what excellent performance looks like. This is not an uncommon attitude - "I am amazing, I don't know what your problem is." In fact, the leadership team has questioned the value of reviews on this site, attributing the negative trends to sour grapes. Spend some time building trust with your people and setting aside your ego. THEN ask how sincere the reviews are. I know several of the reviewers and will say that you will be surprised to learn that some of your top performers have left negative reviews here. Time to listen to what is being said and stop deflecting.

Pros

The pay and benefits are highly competitive. One of the biggest challenges for those of us working here is being unable to leave, not matter how miserable we are or how much we are mistreated, because the pay is so competitive. Another review mentioned this, but it is worth repeating. The leadership at MISO is aware of the bad reviews on here, but have decided that they are irrelevant because it is "just a bunch of people that are disgruntled". Unbelievable. Negative feedback is dismissed because the person providing it is upset or disappointed. Is that not the very nature of negative feedback? Would someone be inclined to leave negative feedback if they were not disappointed or upset? So, MISO leadership, help me understand. Would't that reasoning invalidate all negative feedback?

Cons

Do you miss the 90? Would you like to re-live the glory days of spreadsheets, word documents and powerpoint presentations? Do you think that graduate school is only for losers? Do you still believe that Taylorism is the management system of the future? Do you love top-down, authoritarian leadership? Are you a white man in his 40's or 50's? You are in luck! MISO is the place for you! If you are reading this and are contemplating working for MISO, think hard. Read the comments left by those of us who work here. Compare them to those of other companies in the area and ask yourself if you want to work with a group of people this disillusioned with their leadership and work environment. The leadership at MISO will dismiss this review and carry on with their shenanigans. Little can be done about that. However, you do not have to deal with this. Take my advice - don't. The money isn't worth it.
