Pros

I'm one of the new additions to the MacPherson's team (approx 5 months) and I can say with hand on heart, I'm so glad I made the choice to work here. Since joining, every single person in the company has made me feel welcome, supported and included. The company is in a really exciting time of growth, not only financially but culturally as well. There is a huge amount talent within the organization and lots of opportunity for personal development, if you want it. I was totally aware of some of the negative reviews on here before I was interviewed, but I didn't let that deter me. When being interviewed, members of the leadership team tackled these reviews head on with me - the transparency and acknowledgment was a refreshing change and I could see that there was a real desire to help change negative beliefs and move forward in a positive way. That's part of the reason why I have no problem not being anonymous on this review. What's the point? So, in summary, the people and the company are fantastic and I couldn't be prouder to work here!

Cons

It's hard and pretty exhausting when you're really trying to move things forward but are pulled back by those who are unable to let go of the past. I know it's been a tough road and as a newbie I won't be able to fully understand the previous negative experiences, but I am personally invested in continuing the bright path that we have set out and ultimately making MacPherson's a great place to come to work, always.

Pros

Well respected market leader is distribution of art materials. Company has been in business for over 100+ years. Company was sold by two owners 6 years ago to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Transition has been difficult from a management structure standpoint but has been a financial windfall for employees. Stock price has risen almost 10 fold in 6 years. New management team has come on board in the past 9 months bringing fresh outlook and ideas to turn around what had been a negative environment. Company founder struggled with ESOP transition but has finally found a course forward with new management team and things are on the right track. Former CEO remains on board responsible for new business development. This guy is the world's leading expert in the art materials market and has brought exciting new growth opportunities to the company this past year.

Cons

Transition of ownership to the ESOP structure was difficult and stressful. The past 3 to 4 years have not been easy but recent additions to the executive team and restructure of reporting have turned things around. What I don't understand is why some people seem to hang on to old beliefs based on old experiences. These people work in the SF Bay Area where unemployment is almost non-existent. If they're so unhappy why don't they find another home? You're either part of the problem or part of the solution. Either be part of the solution or find another job. They seem to think if the CEO left everything would be fixed. What they don't understand is the CEO is the driver of the business. He's the expert in market that fuels the growth. Is he a great manager? Probably not. But the new management team and structure that has recently been put in place points the way forward. Stop living in the past.

Positive changes

Pros

This is a company where the leaders have been brave enough to recognize where they were failing their employees and are working hard to change this. Many of the team members here are seeing a fresh new approach that is supportive and focused around the people. There still, however, appears to be a few who cannot let go of their negative experiences and perceptions. Their voice is not representative of all. It’s frustrating to read such negative reviews when there is a new positive outlook here that is moving the company forward. Yes they have introduced new tools that may not work for everyone but they have helped many look at things differently to help us on our journey so that we can change. They have also brought in some great new team members that are bringing a fresh new perspective to support people first. Rather than MacPherson’s being as a negative environment by a few, the company should be seen as one that is proactively turning over a new leaf. To be honest it feels good to work here at such a positive time of change.

Cons

Change is hard and it will be tough at times but those who are holding on to their negativity and are not prepared to give it a chance are not helping us move forward.
