Pros

Macfadden provides decent benefits. The work is often interesting with lots of opportunities to travel under the USAID/OFDA contract and work on a variety of humanitarian responses. The staff at USAID/OFDA are very engaging and friendly people (as an information officer, I have more working contact with USAID/OFDA staff than with staff from Macfadden).

Cons

Disorganized and often unresponsive HR. For information specialist position: Long hours under the USAID/OFDA contract. Not much forewarning for deployments overseas.

Mismanaged company, a joke of a leadership team.

Pros

Close to a metro station.

Cons

One of the most unethical companies I've ever worked for. Do yourself a favor and do not consider interviewing or taking a job here. I am on my way out the door.

Pros

Pros are few: - Good leverage for later in your career, USAID experience will really count for something. - Nice team.

Cons

- Horrible benefits: Even though my salary increased from my last contractor, I actually lost money due to having to pay for everything. Some colleagues of mine purchase their health insurance on the open market due to it being cheaper. I also know of colleagues who have taken second jobs to make up for the difference in benefits. It is also a bit awkward when MacFadden does not take part in the Metro benefits for Federal Employees and contractors. It seems like every chance they get to cut corners and short change employees, they will take. - Ineffective management: There is incredibly poor communication from management, unclear roles, and employees are not given the tools to complete their jobs. For example,it took more than a month for our team to be given a scanner, even though one of most important tasks is to scan documents. - Micromanagement is rampant here: Everything needs to go through team leaders, there is little trust between management and employees. Bosses will mention how they do not want to micromanage and then do it anyways, which makes for a very odd acknowledgement that they are doing so, but not caring about it.
