High Potential, Inexperienced Leadership

Pros

If you can handle the fire, there is growth potential at this company. There has been a lot of hiring and new positions open. Promotions tend to be infomral and not subject to a rigorous process.

Cons

The company claims to be "for developers", but most of the leaders in the company are incapable of using the product. Even worse, occasionally leaders who aren't technical speak as if they are an authority on what technical users want. A company the size of Mailgun frequently takes on the identity of the leader of the company. This is rarely endearing and at Mailgun this is no exception. Some of the leaders are unnecessarily vulgar and publicly embarrass and humiliate others. You must have thick skin to work here. Expect the bar to constantly change. With elevated job titles, some executives are struggling with keeping their ego under control. It is the rule, not the exception, to accommodate an executive. Expect some of them to be routinely late and have no respect for the impact on others. Ironically, people are fired symbolically, such as for missing a meeting. The stereotypical "sales culture" is pervasive at Mailgun. Those who are loud and obnoxious are elevated.

Pros

...the best decisions I could have made when I started looking for a new role. When I started looking for a new job, I honestly was not familiar with Mailgun or what they did. I was searching for jobs at larger companies with bigger reputations and brands that were more easily recognizable. However, I began to be sold on Mailgun the more I talked with a friend and former co-worker who started to work at Mailgun only a few months prior to me. She let me know that although she had a ton of work (more on that later) it was the people, the culture and the benefits that really had her buying into Mailgun. Once she explained what she meant I was sold and applied for the second recruiter opening. I was lucky enough to end up getting the role and now that I have been here for 8 months I can honestly agree that what she told me about the people, the culture, and the benefits are true. In my opinion, those are the biggest three pros about Mailgun. The people you will work with here are all very smart, funny, hard-working, and just downright good folks. I was able to come in knowing one person but I was easily able to connect with not just my immediate team but people from all over the company that I can truly call friends now rather than just co-workers. The culture here is very casual but hard working. You can come to work in a button-down shirt and slacks or shorts and flip-flops. The benefits are very competitive and the PTO you get when you start is awesome. Mailgun pays 100% of employee insurance premiums. Did I mention the flexible work from home ability on top of that? This company really does a lot to try and make sure their employees are working hard but not burnt out.

Cons

No matter the job you get you will have a lot of work to do. We are still a small and growing IT company so its all hands on deck. You also absolutely have to be someone who can be a self-starter and self-teacher. While we are working on implementing better on-boarding measures you will more than likely be thrown into the deep end of your role once you get here.

Pros

There were snacks in the office.

Cons

Current leadership falls under one individual who overworks employees, does not understand email and has created a toxic work environment. Diversity is relatively non-existent and any communication or feedback to HR is blatantly ignored. If you do decide to work at Mailgun, expect to be overworked, under paid and to be part of the constant turnover.
