A Well-Meaning Disaster

Pros

You can work from home, the compensation and benefits are nice, and the people are (mostly) nice.

Cons

Unless you are one of the few people who has worked for MapLarge for 3+ years, you have no hope of lasting. There is a revolving door of people, most of whom are very talented, who the CTO quickly dismisses for not "integrating" well enough, despite the fact his expectations are as foggy as a San Francisco morning and as unexpectedly evolving as rapidly the influenza virus. Additionally, instead of spending fifteen minutes or so on the typical "standup" meeting, MapLarge has two such meetings that routinely last an hour long. The team is constantly in a hurry to get everything done, and this contributes to it.

Pros

The company really values A players who produce results and will reinvent the role and move mountains to make sure you are in the right situation. The company has doubled in size every year for the last 5 years so there are lots of opportunities to take on more responsibility.

Cons

If you are a reliable B grade performer who does reasonably good work you can feel pretty insecure because they work so hard to make sure the best people thrive they tend to run off the mediocre people even if they are "good enough".

Pros

Working remote Making software that has an impact

Cons

Team structure is very vague, everyone is kind of just under the CTO Front-end uses their own in-house MV* framework that isn't well documented Happier to rebuild the wheel than include 3rd party tools Not many people in the org have the auth to give something the "go ahead" so decisions are slow and bottle-necked at the top
