Pros

Masonry is a pretty laid back environment. The people who work there are great, and it has a start-up feel to it. Board games and beers are often part of your day. Most importantly, you'll receive web design experience that's valuable when working in other design firms.

Cons

During my time as Masonry I felt generally self-managed. That being said, I worked hard to produce quality design work in every project. I looked for opportunities to build the business and improve processes. I worked efficiently and when my plate emptied, I always looked to help others with their tasks. Still, my reviews seemed to never reflect my quality of work. It seemed like management (Ross) never took the time to observe the workload or performance of his employees. Also, when I began working I was told that after 6 months of full time employment health benefits would kick in. 6 months passed, 7 months passed and after 8 months I confronted Ross on the issue. He told me to email someone who would be able to set it up for me. I sent the email right away and heard back that the contact no longer worked for that company. I followed a trail of emails to employees who would be able to help and eventually just stopped hearing back. I worked a year without benefits and paid for insurance myself. It was frustrating that management didn't do more to make good on their promises. About a year into my time at Masonry I was approached by a fairly well-known design firm looking to bring me on. I was excited for the opportunity, the increased pay and for the benefits. When I sat down to tell Ross about the decision to leave he responded with a total lack of maturity. I was told that I was naive to expect any job to be perfect (I didn't). He told me I had been slacking since I began working there (not true). He told me that he was the reason I was able to buy a home (which I had done earlier that year with savings from my first few jobs). I left the conversation shocked, but so thankful that I had decided to leave. Management as Masonry lacks the maturity required to manage.
