I have been working at Mathematica full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of growth potential in the job. If you perform well, generally people will pull you into new interesting work and you can keep growing your skills. Depends on your projects, but I've been able to generally stick to a 40 hr workweek. Almost everyone I've met has been extremely kind and whip smart. It's an employee owned company, which isn't everything -- but definitely different than a publically traded company. Employees have a bit more voice. Mathematica has been very flexible and supportive during the COVID pandemic, especially for parents. Work from home is very doable.

    Cons

Government work is government work - and that's most of what we do. Detailed timesheets are a hassle and it can be a challenge if the budget doesn't align with the amount of work that needs done. Bureaucracy. When you first start, your work might not be aligned with your skill set. You do have to work your way into more interesting roles that fit with your interests, and be strategic about what you say "yes" and "no" to. You have to be a strong advocate for your time and work closely with a supervisor who can find the right roles for you. There are multiples offices and plenty of WFH staff, so you have to learn how to make connections with people you might not meet face-to-face.

I worked at Mathematica full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I found Mathematica to be a supportive work environment where we all had similarly "nerdy" research interests. The workload kept me busy but I rarely felt like I truly had too much on my plate. I learned a lot about new topic areas, and expanded my confidence in research methods.

    Cons

Though the work was collaborative, it wasn't hard to get a little isolated in your own project bubble of working alone with only occasional check-ins.

I worked at Mathematica full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent people. Very smart, very dedicated. That is really the secret behind the brand. Work is varied and interesting -- you will have no shortage of challenging projects. And supervisors are very supportive of individual growth, helping you find opportunities to build new skills. People make careers at Mathematica, which says a lot. Leadership is stable and forward-thinking. And they offer a professional yet highly flexible and accommodating work environment. A great place for wonky types.

    Cons

Pay is not the most competitive, but is compensated by overall benefits package including shares in the employee-owned company.

    Pros

It's a good place to work with smart colleagues. Some of the work is boring but good projects make a difference.

    Cons

Low salary for technical non research staff, culture is only ok

I have been working at Mathematica full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Everyone is friendly. Office space is great. Rigorous recruiting process. Strong quality of work. It appears the company rewards people for their tenure and commitment.

    Cons

People seem to work in silos. They only know their part of a project/process. Despite the rigorous recruiting the salary is not competitive. You have to fight tooth and nail and you’ll still come up short. Benefits are also not competitive.
